Paint recycling
in Massachusetts.
Paint disposal in Boston, Cambridge, Worcester, Springfield and Northampton. Massachusetts has no PaintCare program, so there's no free store take-back. What you do depends on your city or town.
Check your local rules.
MassDEP says latex paint can go in the trash once it's completely dry. Let small amounts dry in the open can; for more, mix in kitty litter. Never put liquid paint in the trash or down the drain. Don't try to dry out oil-based paint, stain or varnish; MassDEP says to save it for a household hazardous waste collection or take it to a commercial hazardous waste company. Many towns hold only a few collection days a year, and most are for their own residents, so check your city or town's page first. Paint is not on the state's list of items banned from the trash. A state commission recommended a paint recycling law in June 2025, but no program exists yet. The paint recycling bills (S.647 and H.886) were still waiting in the Ways and Means committees in October 2026.
No free state program.
Massachusetts doesn’t have a statewide paint program, so it depends on your city or county. Each city guide shows where latex and oil-based paint can go.

Boston ↗
Boston has no year-round paint drop-off and no store take-back, because Massachusetts has no PaintCare program. Latex paint goes in your trash once it's dry. Oil-based paint goes to a Boston Public Works Zero Waste Day. The next one is Saturday, November 21, 2026, at the West Roxbury DPW yard on Gardner Street.
Checked October 7, 2026MassachusettsCambridge ↗
Cambridge, Massachusetts takes both latex and oil-based paint at its four household hazardous waste days at 50 Mooney Street. Only one 2026 date is left: Saturday, November 7. Between events, dry latex can go out with your trash, lid off. The Recycling Center on Hampshire Street doesn't list paint among the things it takes.
Checked October 7, 2026MassachusettsNorthampton ↗
Northampton holds one household hazardous waste collection a year. In 2026 it’s Saturday, October 31, at Smith Vocational High School, and you must register by October 18. It takes oil-based paint, not latex. Latex gets dried out and thrown away. Residents of Florence and Leeds use the same Northampton program.
Checked October 7, 2026MassachusettsSpringfield ↗
This guide is for Springfield, Massachusetts, in Hampden County. The city’s DPW holds free hazardous waste days at 70 Tapley Street for oil-based paint, but all of its 2026 days are over. Latex paint never goes there: dry it and put it in your trash barrel. For oil-based paint before 2027, the nearest weekly option is Veolia’s paid center in Westfield.
Checked October 7, 2026MassachusettsWorcester ↗
In Worcester, latex paint goes in the trash once it’s dried or soaked up, in a yellow city bag. Oil-based paint and stain go to the city’s free Household Hazardous Waste Days at 1065 Millbury Street, by appointment, for Worcester residents only. If you can’t wait for one, Veolia runs a paid drop-off center in Sutton, south of the city.

Paint stores won’t take these. Take them to your local household hazardous waste site. Your city guide lists it.
