Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Cumberland.

717 Park Street, Cumberland, MD 21502
No spray cans, thinner, or unlabeled, leaking or empty cans. Allegany County's own paint page doesn't mention PaintCare; the store's role here rests on PaintCare's listing.
10601 New Georges Creek Road SW, Frostburg, MD 21532
No spray cans, thinner, or unlabeled, leaking or empty cans. It's the only other Allegany County store PaintCare lists, so it's the backup if the Park Street store is full.
13300 New Georges Creek Road, Frostburg, MD 21532
No liquid paint, oil-based paint or thinner. The county says oil-based paint is hazardous and belongs at a household hazardous waste event. Use 301-876-9563 for the Recycling Office; that's the number on the county's and the city's pages. The state's county table lists 301-676-9563.
4 paint stores and 0 hazardous waste sites, closest first. Paint stores take house paint, stain and varnish, usually up to a set amount per visit. Hazardous waste sites also take chemicals like thinner, but some only serve local residents. Call before you go.

Sort the cans. Good latex and oil-based paint goes to Park Street, 5 gallons a trip. Spread big loads over several visits or split them with the Frostburg store. Dry out nearly empty latex cans and set them out with your trash.
The paint can go to a PaintCare store, but the turpentine and spray cans can't. Keep them sealed until Allegany County posts its next hazardous waste day, and expect a per-pound fee if it's run like the May 2026 event.
Cumberland's bulk pickup ($8.23 and up per item, booked through Public Works at 301-759-6620) is for furniture, mattresses and appliances. Paint isn't on its list. Use the store, or dry latex and put it in your regular trash.
The MV Smith and Oldtown refuse sites take trash and motor oil, not liquid paint. Dry your latex before you haul it there, or bring the cans to a Sherwin-Williams on your next trip to Cumberland or Frostburg.
Take up to 5 gallons of latex or oil-based house paint to Sherwin-Williams, 717 Park Street, during store hours; call 301-724-4356 first. Latex can also be dried with cat litter and put in your city trash with the lid off. Thinner and other chemicals have to wait for an Allegany County hazardous waste day; none had been posted after the May 7, 2026 event when we checked in October 2026.
In Cumberland, in Allegany County in western Maryland, the steady option for leftover paint is the Sherwin-Williams on Park Street, a PaintCare store. Allegany County doesn't run a regular hazardous waste site. Its "Too Toxic To Trash" days come about every two years, and its May 7, 2026 event charged by the pound. This guide is for Cumberland, Maryland, not Cumberland County in other states.
Allegany's May 7, 2026 event at the County Fairgrounds was run by an outside company, needed a time-slot sign-up, and charged residents by the pound. Oil-based paint was $0.62 a pound and paint thinner $1.58 a pound. The county called it an extra event on top of its usual low- or no-cost event every two years.
At the October 9, 2021 Too Toxic To Trash day, which was for county residents only, latex paint cost $3 a container. That's an old price from an old event. Today a PaintCare store takes latex for free, so there's no reason to save it for an event.
Cumberland's special recycling events page says paint must be fully dried before it goes out with curbside trash. Cans with dried paint can't be recycled; only a completely empty can goes in recycling. The same page says to keep containers of old, unlabeled or possibly toxic liquids out of the trash and recycling.
PaintCare lists the Cumberland and Frostburg stores for Maryland households and businesses, and West Virginia isn't one of PaintCare's states. If you live in Ridgeley or elsewhere across the Potomac in West Virginia, call the store before you go, or ask your own county.
The county's Oldtown and MV Smith (Flintstone) refuse sites and the Mountainview Landfill take trash, recycling and motor oil. None lists paint. The county says dried latex can go in the trash.
The Frostburg Sherwin-Williams on New Georges Creek Road is the only other Allegany County store PaintCare lists. The county suggests giving usable paint to a community center, church, theater or Habitat for Humanity; the Allegany ReStore at 28 Lane Avenue (301-268-1608) doesn't say if it takes paint, so call. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Keep paint in its original labeled can with the lid tight; the stores won't take unlabeled, leaking or empty cans. To dry latex, the county says to stir in about equal parts cat litter until it won't spill, then trash it with the lid off. A can with just a little paint can dry on its own with the lid off.
Full preparation checklist →Sherwin-Williams at 717 Park Street takes up to 5 gallons per visit of latex or oil-based house paint for free. The Frostburg Sherwin-Williams is the backup.
Only latex that is fully dried. The city says to open the can and let it dry, or mix in cat litter. Liquid paint and oil-based paint shouldn't go in the trash.
None had been posted when we checked on October 16, 2026. The last one was May 7, 2026 at the County Fairgrounds, with per-pound fees. Call the Recycling Office at 301-876-9563 or watch alleganygov.org.
PaintCare stores don't take them. Keep them sealed and labeled for the next county event. At the May 2026 event, aerosols were $1.09 a pound and thinner $1.58 a pound.
Yes. PaintCare lists it for Maryland businesses as well as households, within PaintCare's business limits. Contractors with 100+ gallons can ask PaintCare for a pickup.
On October 16, 2026 we read Allegany County's paint page, recycling page, May 7, 2026 event notice and cost sheet; Cumberland's recycling events, trash and bulk pickup pages; a 2021 MACo item on the county's event; MDE's county table; the 211 ReStore listing; and PaintCare's Maryland pages and locator data. The county paint page still says to take latex and oil-based paint to a household hazardous waste event and doesn't mention PaintCare. The Recycling Office phone is 301-876-9563 on the county and city pages but 301-676-9563 in MDE's table. The city's paint advice comes from an older (2021) recycling article. We found no county event after May 7, 2026 and didn't check store capacity or landfill fees for dried paint.
