Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is home to Westmoreland County's paint drop-off: Westmoreland Cleanways' Recycling Center on Pleasant Unity Mutual Road, where Noble Environmental takes latex and oil-based paint on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday for $0.80 a pound. City of Greensburg residents also have a home-pickup option through Waste Management. Latex can be dried and thrown out.
Only on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday morning
Paint is taken 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday, when Noble Environmental staff are on site. Recycling Center staff are not allowed to handle household chemicals, so a Monday, Friday or second-Saturday visit won't work for paint.
Weighed, card only
Noble weighs your load on site at $0.80 a pound and takes debit or credit cards only. Containers must be 5 gallons or smaller, and Noble keeps them. Follow the recycling entrance sign to the back of the lot and stay in your car.
City residents: ask WM to pick it up
Westmoreland Cleanways lists the City of Greensburg among Waste Management customers with curbside household hazardous waste pickup built into the trash contract. Call 1-800-449-7587 or go to wmatyourdoor.com to schedule; Cleanways says extra fees may apply and some items may be restricted, and it warns its list may be out of date.
Hempfield Township has its own hauler program
Hempfield, which surrounds the city, is on the County Hauling list (724-929-7694), along with Murrysville, New Kensington, Export, Manor and Sewickley Township. Irwin, North Huntingdon, Trafford, Adamsburg and Arona use WM's service. Penn Township and Mount Pleasant Township use Republic (724-887-9400). Avonmore uses Bankosh Sanitation (724-461-4185), and Delmont uses Pro Waste (724-433-3440).
Dry latex the Cleanways way
Cleanways suggests using it up, giving it to a group like a local theater, or pouring it over clay cat litter or shredded newspaper, letting it dry, bagging it and throwing it away. A paint hardener powder works too. To store paint, cover the opening with plastic wrap, close the lid and turn the can upside down.
