In Salina, Kansas (Saline County), the city's Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 315 E. Elm St. takes latex and oil-based paint for free. It's open Thursdays 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month, 8 a.m.-noon. Each household can bring up to 5 gallons of liquids a week. Latex that has dried solid can go in your trash.
Thursdays and first Saturdays only
The facility is open Thursdays 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month 8 a.m.-noon. If neither works, call 785-826-6638 to set up an appointment outside those hours.
5 gallons of liquid a week
The weekly limit is 5 gallons of liquids or 50 pounds of solids per household. A basement with 15 gallons of paint means three weekly trips, or drying the latex for the trash.
Dry latex can go in the trash, lids off
The city says empty paint cans and latex paint that has turned solid can go in your household trash with the lids removed. Liquid paint, and all oil-based paint, should go to Elm Street.
Free reuse center
The facility has a reuse center where you can pick up usable products at no charge. The city doesn't list what's on the shelves, so ask whether paint is there. Pesticides go on the shelves only if the original seal is intact.
