THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint to the MASWU Household Hazardous Waste Facility on E. First St. in McPherson on a Thursday, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. It’s free for McPherson County residents, up to 5 gallons of liquid per visit, and takes latex and oil-based paint. Google Maps gets it wrong, so if you get lost go to the transfer station gate at 1431 17th Ave.
In McPherson, Kansas, leftover paint goes to the McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility (MASWU) Household Hazardous Waste Facility on E. First St., just south of the transfer station. It’s open Thursdays only, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. It takes latex and oil-based paint free from McPherson County residents, up to 5 gallons of liquid per visit. Kansas has no paint recycling program, so stores don’t take paint back.
Don’t trust your map app
MASWU says Google Maps sends people to the wrong place. Turn onto First St. (it used to be Limestone Rd.) between I-135 and 17th Avenue. If you get lost, stop at the transfer station gate house, 1431 17th Ave., and staff will point you there.
Thursday is the only day
The facility is open Thursdays 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. There’s no Saturday option. The transfer station next door is open other days, but it isn’t where paint goes. MASWU is closed Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026.
5 gallons per visit, or you pay
Each visit is limited to 5 gallons of liquid or 50 pounds of solids. Bring more and MASWU charges a fee. It doesn’t publish the rate, so leave a message at 620-241-4432 before hauling a big load.
Dried paint and empty cans go in the trash
MASWU says empty cans, and cans where the paint has dried out, can go in your regular trash with the lid off. Its brochure says to solidify liquid latex or bring it in, and lists oil-based paint for the facility.
Whole county, not just McPherson
The facility is for residents of all of McPherson County. MASWU serves the county’s towns, including Lindsborg, Moundridge, Inman, Canton, Galva, Marquette and Windom. The Sedgwick County facility in Wichita is for Sedgwick County residents.
