From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.
It’s $50 with garbage pickup or $150 without, usually covering two permits. A qualifying resident 65+ gets one free household permit. Compare that with a public PaintCare store before buying one for a few cans.
Contractors and commercial haulers can’t use this paint area. Ask which approved business option the painter will use. A commercial trash permit on the town site doesn’t cover this household area.
The paint area takes paint cans only, not brushes, rinse water, sprayers or the rest of the kit; the town handles those separately. Ask the hazardous-waste program about other liquids. All southwest 2026 dates were over as of October 4.
Darien residents with a permit can drop off paint at 126 Ledge Road. The paint is free; the yearly entry permit costs $50 or $150. Hazardous-waste days are a separate service.
Darien takes household paint year-round at its Recycling & Refuse Center, but you need a permit to get in. The town’s hazardous-waste day doesn’t take regular house paint, since the transfer station handles it.
Paint drop-off is free, but entering Darien’s center takes a valid permit. If you don’t have one, compare its price with a PaintCare store before buying it for a few cans.
The 2026 event notice sends oil and latex paint, stains and varnishes to the year-round paint area. Thinner, stripper, spray cans and two-part coatings have other rules. All southwest regional 2026 hazardous-waste dates were over as of October 4; ask Public Works where those go.
A resident’s access doesn’t let a contractor drop paint here. Use PaintCare’s locator and business rules, not the town’s older contractor-store list. Still selling paint doesn’t mean a store still takes it back.
The town’s older contractor list names Sherwin-Williams, 1100 Hope Street, Stamford, 203-329-8100, and PaintCare’s 2025 report lists it too. Call about current drop-off, hours, business use and space. Don’t count on the old list’s 5-gallon limit.
For a lot of paint, check PaintCare’s free pickup before paying a hauler. It usually starts at 100 gallons (by can size) and needs approval. Solvents need a separate hazardous-waste or business disposal option; don’t mix them with paint.

Use labeled original cans with tight lids; leave out empty, leaking or oversized ones. Display the windshield permit, use the staffed paint area, and plan to unload safely yourself.
Full preparation checklist →No. You need a valid Darien permit. Living nearby isn’t enough.
No. Town rules forbid taking paint. It isn’t a swap.
No. It sends regular oil and latex paint and listed finishes to the transfer station.
The town’s household paint PDF is old but still linked. The daily town limit is unknown. PaintCare’s 2025 report backs up the Stamford Hope Street store, but we haven’t confirmed it takes paint today; call first.
