THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to the Victorville household hazardous waste center, 14889 Loves Lane behind the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds, on a Wednesday or Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it's free for San Bernardino County residents. Bring no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip, in containers of 5 gallons or less. On a Saturday, use Apple Valley (13450 Nomwaket Road, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.) or Hesperia (17443 Lemon Street).

In Victorville, in San Bernardino County's High Desert, leftover paint goes to the city's household hazardous waste center at 14889 Loves Lane, behind the County Fairgrounds. It's open Wednesdays and Sundays and is free for county residents. Hesperia and Apple Valley run their own sites on other days, and any county resident can use any of them.

Three High Desert sites, three schedules

Victorville's center is open Wednesday and Sunday. Apple Valley's is Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Hesperia's is Thursday and Saturday on the county's page. Victorville says any High Desert resident can use any county center for free, so pick the one whose day fits. Victorville closes on city holidays, Apple Valley on town holidays, Hesperia on county holidays.

Finding the Loves Lane site

The center sits behind the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds, near Desert Knoll Drive and 7th Street. PaintCare's map lists it under the fairgrounds' 14800 7th St. address, but the city and county both give 14889 Loves Lane. Call 760-955-8615 if you can't find the gate.

Hesperia hours don't match

The county's facility page lists Hesperia on Thursday 9 a.m.–1 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.–2 p.m. PaintCare's listing says only the 2nd and 4th Saturday, 8 a.m.–1 p.m. Call 909-382-5401 before driving to Lemon Street. Hesperia also has a Material Exchange Store (Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.) where county residents can pick up usable products for free.

Helendale, Lucerne Valley and Adelanto

The county's next one-day event in the area is set for Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Helendale Community Center, 26540 Vista Road. It takes paint, needs ID, and turns away anything brought before 8 a.m. Lucerne Valley has a small site behind Fire Station 8 (33269 Old Woman Springs Rd.) that takes latex paint only on dates you must confirm at 800-645-9228. The county's facility list has no site in Adelanto.

Not in the cart

Victorville lists paint among items that can't go in trash or recycling carts. It has to go to a hazardous waste center.

Free pickup programs and other options

For house paint alone, PaintCare lists Vista Paint at 16210 Bear Valley Rd. in Victorville (25 gallons a visit) and Dunn-Edwards at 12475 Mariposa Rd. (20 gallons). Sherwin-Williams at 11938 Hesperia Rd. in Hesperia and Mills True Value in Phelan (10 gallons) are also listed. Stores don't take spray cans. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Keep paint in its original can, or label it with what's inside. Nothing over 5 gallons, lids sealed, nothing leaking. Set the cans in the back of the car or truck so they can't tip, and keep the load under 15 gallons or 125 pounds. Bring something that shows your county address.

Victorville questions5
Is the Victorville hazardous waste center open on Saturday?

No. It's open Wednesday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Saturday, Apple Valley's site on Nomwaket Road is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the county lists Hesperia as open Saturday too.

Do I have to live in Victorville to use it?

No. The city says any High Desert resident can use any San Bernardino County center free. The county says the centers are for county residents and may ask for proof of where you live.

Can I bring spray paint and thinner?

Thinner, yes: the county's list includes paint thinner. For spray cans, Apple Valley's site lists aerosol cans, but the city and county pages for Loves Lane don't name them, so call 760-955-8615 before you bring them there. Paint stores in the PaintCare program don't take spray cans.

I'm a painting contractor in Victorville. Where does my paint go?

Not to the High Desert household sites; they refuse business waste. Paint stores in the PaintCare program take house paint from businesses. For other hazardous waste, very small businesses use the county's program at the central facility in San Bernardino; call 909-382-5401.

Can I get free paint in the High Desert?

Sometimes. Hesperia's Material Exchange Store gives usable products to county residents on Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. What's there depends on what people drop off. The county's central site in San Bernardino also gives residents up to five 5-gallon buckets of recycled paint a month.

Sources and how we checked11

October 16, 2026: read the City of Victorville's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center page and its hazardous waste page (via WebFetch; direct downloads were blocked); San Bernardino County Fire's collection facilities page, HHW program page, accepted items page and the Helendale event page (read in full by download); the Town of Apple Valley's trash and solid waste FAQ; and PaintCare's locator data for Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley and Phelan. Conflicts: PaintCare's address for the Victorville site (14800 7th St.) differs from the city and county (14889 Loves Lane). Hesperia hours differ between the county page (Thursday and Saturday) and PaintCare (2nd and 4th Saturday). The Helendale event (Oct. 24, 2026) is set within the next few weeks, so it's written as "set for"; no other High Desert event dates were posted. The recycled paint bucket giveaway (5 a month) is described for the central San Bernardino facility; whether Hesperia's store has paint wasn't stated. Peer review (Oct. 16): the city and county pages don't name aerosol cans for Loves Lane, so the spray paint FAQ now says to call. Apple Valley's 5th-Saturday closure appears only in an older flyer we didn't open, so it was left out. Store hours weren't checked.
