If it's only house paint, drop it at Dunn-Edwards on W. Rancho Vista Blvd. or Sherwin-Williams on W. Avenue P any day they're open. If you have spray cans or thinner too, wait for a first or third Saturday and take it all to the AVECC.
Box it up and take it to 1200 W. City Ranch Road on a first or third Saturday. Keep it under 15 gallons or 125 pounds; if you have more, come back on the next open Saturday.
Check the AVECC Reuse Center on an open Saturday. Households can take up to five items a week for free, and you don't need to drop anything off.
The AVECC won't take it. Take house paint to a PaintCare store. For solvents and other chemicals, book the county's very small business program at a S.A.F.E. center (310-387-1071); you need an EPA ID number.
Take paint to the AVECC, 1200 W. City Ranch Road, on the first or third Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; it's free for Los Angeles County households. Bring no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip. On other days, Dunn-Edwards on W. Rancho Vista Blvd. and Sherwin-Williams on W. Avenue P take house paint for free.
In Palmdale, in the Antelope Valley part of Los Angeles County, leftover paint goes to the Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center (AVECC) at 1200 W. City Ranch Road, the same address as the Antelope Valley Recycling and Disposal Facility. It's free but open only on the first and third Saturday of each month. The cities of Lancaster and Palmdale run it with the county, CalRecycle and WM, and any Los Angeles County household can use it.
The AVECC is open only on the first and third Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, and closed on holidays. The county calendar lists Nov. 7, Nov. 21, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19, 2026. The center may close early if it fills up, so don't wait until 2:45. The next opening is set for Saturday, Oct. 17, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lancaster's city page sends its residents to the AVECC in Palmdale. The county says any Los Angeles County resident can use it, as well as the City of Los Angeles S.A.F.E. centers which are open every weekend.
The AVECC has a Reuse Center open the same Saturdays. You can take usable paint, cleaners and garden products for free, up to five items per household per week. You don't have to drop anything off first.
Palmdale's WM service guide bans paint from the trash cart and from bulky-item pickup. Your landfill e-vouchers for the Antelope Valley Recycling and Disposal Facility don't cover hazardous waste either. Paint has to go to the AVECC or a PaintCare store.
The county's events list for the valley shows a mattress event in Lake Los Angeles set for Oct. 17 and tire events in Quartz Hill, Littlerock, Lancaster and Palmdale set for Oct. 24. None of them take paint. Use the AVECC.
For house paint, stain and varnish only, PaintCare lists Dunn-Edwards at 736 W. Rancho Vista Blvd. and Sherwin-Williams at 550 W. Avenue P in Palmdale (20 gallons a visit each). In Lancaster, Sherwin-Williams at 1206 Commerce Center Dr. takes 20 gallons and PPG Paints at 43639 10th St. W takes 5. Stores don't take spray cans. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Pack cans in cardboard boxes in the trunk, away from passengers, with nothing else in there. Keep paint in its original container, lids tight, nothing over 5 gallons. Label anything not in its original can. Stay in your car when you arrive; staff unload the trunk.
Full preparation checklist →The first and third Saturday of each month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The county lists Nov. 7, Nov. 21, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19, 2026. It's closed on holidays.

No. It refuses business waste. PaintCare stores take house paint from businesses. For other hazardous waste, small businesses with an EPA ID number can book a paid appointment at a City of Los Angeles S.A.F.E. center at 310-387-1071.
Palmdale's WM service guide lists paint as not allowed in the trash cart. Take it to the AVECC or a PaintCare store instead.
October 16, 2026: read LA County's CleanLA collection centers page, the 2026 Antelope Valley flyer (downloaded), the CleanLA calendar for the AVECC and the county events list, the City of Palmdale's calendar entries and its 2025 WM residential service guide (downloaded), the City of Lancaster's hazardous waste page (in a browser), and PaintCare's locator data for Palmdale and Lancaster. The Oct. 17 opening falls within seven days, so it's written as "set for"; the main advice gives the first-and-third-Saturday rule. PaintCare's listing for the AVECC has a broken phone number; we used the county's 888-CLEAN-LA line (888-253-2652). The Oct. 17 mattress event and the Oct. 24 tire events come from the county events list. Peer review (Oct. 16) changed "any Antelope Valley household" to any Los Angeles County household, because the county pages limit the center to county residents; Lancaster's page says all Antelope Valley residents. No Antelope Valley one-day hazardous waste or PaintCare events were posted. The S.A.F.E. centers' weekend hours weren't checked; see the Los Angeles guide. Store hours weren't checked.
