Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Dothan.

1290 Burkett Road, Dothan, AL
Because the Landfill page calls the landfill closed, don’t assume paint is taken until Environmental Services (281 Complex Drive, Suite 1; 334-615-3820) tells you so. On the Landfill page’s list of other area sites, a note that no hazardous materials such as oils, paints and lacquers will be accepted is printed under the Waste Away transfer station entry.
Don’t put them in the green cart; Dothan’s code bans paints and liquids there. Use the paint up or give it away. If you can’t, call 334-615-3820 and ask whether the cans should be dried or brought to the Burkett Road landfill.
The city’s recycling page sends paints and lacquers to the Municipal Landfill at 1290 Burkett Road for special handling, but its Landfill page says the landfill is closed. Keep the cans sealed in their original containers and call Environmental Services at 334-615-3820 before you go.
The county’s garbage policy, effective Oct. 1, 2026, keeps paint, liquids and household hazardous waste out of the county container. Ask the Sanitation office (334-793-5442) what to do. The city code says county residents also pay a per-ton fee at the city landfill.
Dothan’s code says building material from a contractor, trash from work done for pay, and any hazardous refuse must be removed by the owner or producer, not the city. The city charges commercial customers by the ton at its landfill. On the city’s list of other area sites, the Waste Away transfer station entry says no paints or lacquers will be accepted. Plan on a private hazardous waste hauler, and call 334-615-3820 to ask about special waste at the city landfill.
Call Dothan Environmental Services at 334-615-3820 before you throw paint out, and ask whether the Municipal Landfill at 1290 Burkett Road will take it for special handling. The city code says your green cart must not contain liquids, paints or household hazardous waste, and no city page offers a dried-latex exception. The city’s own pages disagree on whether the landfill is open.
Dothan, Alabama (Houston County) has no paint drop-off day or hazardous waste center listed on the city or county websites. The city code bans paint from the green garbage cart. The one place the city names for paint is its Municipal Landfill on Burkett Road, for "special handling", but another city page says that landfill is closed. Alabama has no PaintCare program, so there are no PaintCare store drop-offs. Call Dothan Environmental Services first.
Section 82-53 of the city code says the rollout cart must not contain hot ashes, liquids, paints, tires, hospital waste, animal carcass or parts, household hazardous waste, or automobile parts. Section 82-37 says no hazardous refuse may go in any city container and leaves disposal to the owner or producer. Dothan’s code makes no exception for dried latex, so ask 334-615-3820 before you set out even hardened cans.
The Landfill page says the City of Dothan Sanitary Landfill is closed and will run Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–3 p.m. once it reopens. The Garbage, Recycling & Trash page, and the contact box on the Landfill page itself, say it operates Monday–Thursday 6 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The Recyclable Items page sends paints and lacquers to the landfill at 1290 Burkett Road for special handling. News reports describe years of closures and court fights over the landfill’s expansion (a 2014 closure and a 2021 appeals ruling). Call before you load the car.
The city’s Landfill page lists other area sites as a courtesy: Omussee C&D Landfill (4541 Kinsey Road, Dothan; 334-671-8844) and Rosehill Landfill (Midland City), both permitted for construction and demolition debris only; Coffee County Landfill in Elba; the Waste Away transfer station in Midland City (334-983-4522); and Springhill Regional Landfill in Campbellton, Florida. A note that no hazardous materials such as oils, paints and lacquers, household and pool chemicals or pesticides will be accepted is printed under the Waste Away entry. The page doesn’t say what the other sites do with paint, so call before you haul any there.
PaintCare’s non-program listing shows Madison County’s Handle with Care Collection Center at the Huntsville landfill open on weekdays, but for Madison County households only. No similar center or collection day shows up for Dothan or Houston County on the city, county or PaintCare pages we checked. Dothan residents can’t rely on another county’s site.
Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity lists its ReStore at 2086 Montgomery Highway (334-792-8453). Habitat describes ReStores as donation centers that resell building materials. The listing doesn’t say whether this store takes paint, so call before you bring unopened or nearly full cans.
Alabama has no PaintCare program, so there are no PaintCare store drop-offs. The best options are to use the paint up, give usable cans to a neighbor, church or the Wiregrass Habitat ReStore if it agrees (334-792-8453), or ask Environmental Services (334-615-3820) about special handling at the Burkett Road landfill. Houston County runs a mandatory garbage pickup program (per the state health department’s county page), and the county’s policy also keeps paint out of its garbage containers. Businesses and contractors must haul their own waste under the city code and need a private hazardous waste company for paint.

Keep paint in its original, labeled can with the lid tight, and don’t mix cans together. Don’t put any paint in the green cart or the blue recycling cart; the blue cart takes only cardboard, mixed paper, plastics #1–#5, aluminum beverage cans and steel food cans. If Environmental Services tells you to bring paint to the landfill, pack cans upright in a box. The city code says you’ll need to show Dothan or Houston County residency with a driver’s license or a utility bill.

October 17, 2026: read the City of Dothan Landfill, Garbage/Recycling/Trash and Recyclable Items pages, Chapter 82 of the city code (on Municode, read in the in-app browser), Houston County’s sanitation page and its garbage policy (approved August 2026, effective Oct. 1, 2026), the ADPH Houston County solid waste page, Habitat’s Wiregrass listing, 2019 Waste Dive and 2021 WTVY reports on the landfill, and the PaintCare locator data (no listing in Dothan; Huntsville record 16349 used for contrast and labeled as a non-program listing). Unresolved: whether the city landfill is open and takes paint now (three city pages disagree); whether hardened latex is allowed in the green cart (the code bans paints without an exception); landfill fees for paint; whether the Wiregrass ReStore takes paint; any Houston County collection event. The city’s note against paints is printed under the Waste Away entry in its list of other area sites; we didn’t confirm each site’s own rules. No phone calls were made.
