Paint recycling
in Alabama.
Paint disposal in Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile. Alabama has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take paint back for free. Your city or county decides what happens to your paint, and many places only collect it on a few days a year.
Check your local rules.
ADEM, Alabama’s environmental agency, says most Alabama communities don’t have household hazardous waste collection, so check with your city or county first. Household waste is not regulated as hazardous waste in Alabama. If you have no other option, ADEM says it can go in the regular trash only when there’s no liquid left: let the paint dry with the lid off, or soak it up with cat litter or sawdust, and throw away only a small amount at a time. Never pour paint into a storm drain, and don’t dump, bury or burn it. If the paint is still good, give it to someone who can use it. Huntsville has a free drop-off open every weekday for Madison County residents. Jefferson County (Birmingham) collects paint in April and October, and the City of Mobile plans at least one collection day a year. ADEM’s household waste advice doesn’t cover waste from businesses.
No free state program.
Alabama doesn’t have a statewide paint program, so it depends on your city or county. Each city guide shows where latex and oil-based paint can go.
