THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to the Brown County Hazardous Material Recovery facility, 2561 S. Broadway, on Tuesday 9–3 or Thursday noon–6. Latex costs residents $0.35 a pound; oil-based paint isn’t on the fee list. The City of Green Bay doesn’t pick up paint.

In Green Bay, Wisconsin, paint goes to the Brown County Hazardous Material Recovery facility at 2561 S. Broadway. It’s open to households only two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday. The City of Green Bay doesn’t pick up paint with your trash.

Only Tuesday and Thursday

Household drop-off is Tuesday 9 a.m.–3 p.m. and Thursday noon–6 p.m. There are no weekend hours. The county says Thursday afternoon is the busiest time.

Latex costs 35 cents a pound

Brown County charges residents $0.35 a pound for latex paint. Oil-based paint isn’t on the fee list. Bring cash, a check or a card.

Put paint in the trunk, not the back seat

You stay in your vehicle at the canopy. Staff unload only from the trunk, lift gate or truck bed. They won’t take items from the front or back seats.

The city won’t pick up paint

The City of Green Bay says it doesn’t collect any hazardous waste, and it lists paint and paint thinner as examples. It sends residents to the Brown County facility.

Check the Product Exchange Room

The same facility has a Product Exchange Room, open Tuesday 9–3 and Thursday 1–6. Ask there before buying paint for a small job.

Free pickup programs and other options

Wisconsin has no PaintCare program, so stores don’t take paint back for free. The Wisconsin DNR says dried latex can go in the trash, but Green Bay’s own page lists paint among items the city doesn’t collect. Ask the city before putting dried paint at the curb. Otherwise, use up good paint or give it to someone who will.

Load everything in the trunk, lift gate or truck bed. Use containers you don’t need back, since the facility keeps them. Keep lids tight and labels readable. If you have a truck bed or trailer full, call 920-492-4950 for an appointment first.

Sources and how we checked7

October 7, 2026: read Brown County’s Hazardous Material Recovery hours, acceptable material, rates and fees, and non-resident pages, the City of Green Bay “Hazardous Waste Not Collected” page and the Wisconsin DNR household hazardous waste page. PaintCare’s locator lists the facility as a non-program site with a reuse room. Not found: whether the city accepts dried latex at the curb (the city page lists paint as not collected without separating dried latex; the DNR allows dried latex in trash), what proof of Brown County residency is checked, 2026 holiday closings, any per-visit gallon limit, and whether the Greater Green Bay Habitat ReStore currently takes paint. Brown County’s fee list doesn’t include oil-based paint, but the page doesn’t say “free” in so many words. Peer review (October 7, 2026): rechecked all four Brown County pages and the city page. Facts matched; removed an unsourced reason given for the latex fee.

Checked October 7, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
