Start with these

Sauk County Land Resources and Environment Department (Clean Sweep voucher office)

505 Broadway St, Suite 248, Baraboo, WI 53913

Accepts
This is where you apply for a voucher, not where waste is dropped off. Bring your materials with you; staff must approve them before the voucher is issued. The voucher covers household hazardous waste, such as oil-based paint.
Who can use it
Sauk County households. Businesses and farms are not covered; they must book with Dane County Clean Sweep as very small businesses and pay by the pound.
Hours
Office hours are not on the voucher page; call before you go.
Load limits
One voucher per household per year. Use it within 30 days of approval. Latex paint and motor oil are not covered. The county's 2025 printable guide also leaves out electronics.
Fees
The voucher itself has no listed cost. With it, you pay $15 at Dane County Clean Sweep instead of the $75 out-of-county fee.

The office is in the West Square Building. You can also email conservation@saukcountywi.gov.

Dane County Clean Sweep (with a Sauk County voucher)

7020 Maahic Way, Madison, WI 53718

Accepts
Paints, stains, varnish, paint thinners, solvents, aerosols and most other household chemicals. Dried latex is refused; it goes in the trash.
Who can use it
Out-of-county households can use it for the higher fee. Sauk County residents get the $15 rate only with a voucher. Businesses and farms need an appointment.
Hours
Monday to Friday 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.; Saturday 8 to 10:45 a.m.; closed on holidays. Sauk County's 2025 guide shows slightly different hours and an older Highway 12 address, so go by Dane County's page.
Load limits
Book ahead for large loads, such as 45 gallons or more of paint or stain, or a full truck bed or trailer. Keep products in their original containers, upright in boxes or totes.
Fees
Out-of-county households pay $75 a trip, or $15 with an approved Sauk County voucher. Dane County may charge more for large loads or loads from more than one household.

Stay on Maahic Way to the second entrance marked "Clean Sweep." You unload your own items onto a cart or pallet, then get back in your vehicle. Dane County's page says visitors are asked for proof of Dane County residency, so have your Sauk County voucher in hand to get the $15 rate.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

Sauk County's 2026 Clean Sweep is over, so get a voucher from the Land Resources and Environment Department, 505 Broadway St., Suite 248, Baraboo (608-355-3245), and take your oil-based paint to Dane County Clean Sweep in Madison for $15 instead of $75. One voucher per household per year; latex is not covered. Dry latex until solid and put it in the trash; Baraboo carts refuse liquid paint.

In Baraboo, Wisconsin, oil-based paint goes to Sauk County's Clean Sweep, held once a year at the old Sauk County Landfill on Evergreen Lane. The 2026 Clean Sweep was September 26 and has passed. Until next year, Sauk County gives each household one voucher a year to use Dane County's year-round Clean Sweep in Madison for $15 instead of $75. Latex is not taken by either program; dry it and put it in the trash.

Get a voucher first, then drive to Madison

Bring your paint and chemicals to the Land Resources and Environment Department, 505 Broadway St., Suite 248, in the West Square Building. Staff check your items and approve a voucher. You then have 30 days to take them to Dane County Clean Sweep, where you pay $15 instead of $75. Call 608-355-3245 first, since office hours are not posted.

One voucher per household per year

Gather everything before you apply, because you only get one voucher a year. Latex paint and motor oil are not covered, and the county's 2025 guide also leaves out electronics. Businesses and farms can't use the voucher; they must book with Dane County and pay by the pound.

Baraboo carts refuse liquid paint

City of Baraboo Ordinance 11.07(4) bans paint in liquid form from refuse and recycling carts. Carts with banned items may not be picked up, and you could get a warning or citation. Ask Peterson Sanitation (608-524-6603) about items the city bans.

Dry latex at home

Sauk County says latex is not hazardous waste and can go in the trash once it is completely solid. Open the can and let it dry, or mix in kitty litter, sawdust or a store-bought hardener. For 10 to 25 cans, the county suggests pouring into a plastic-lined box with an absorbent and stirring often.

Lake Delton points to the same Clean Sweep

The Village of Lake Delton sends residents to the same county Clean Sweep. Its page still describes June and September events starting at 8:30 a.m., but the county's own page now lists one event a year, 8 a.m. to noon. Go by the county page.

Free pickup programs and other options

For unopened stock-color latex that is not custom tinted, Sauk County suggests asking the store whether it will take it back for a refund. Share leftover paint with neighbors or friends. The Wisconsin DNR notes that some permanent sites run free product exchanges for usable paint; Dane County's Clean Sweep has one. Columbia County's year-round recycling facility takes electronics and demolition waste but not paint.

Keep oil-based paint in its original labeled can with the lid tight. For the voucher, bring the actual items to the Baraboo office so staff can approve them. For the Dane County trip, pack cans upright in boxes or rigid totes, and do not mix products or put them in plastic bags. For latex, let it dry with the lid off, or stir in kitty litter, and leave the lid off when you put it in the trash so the hauler can see it is dry.

Sources and how we checked11

October 16, 2026: Read Sauk County's Clean Sweep page and 2026 flyer (PDF, read with pdftotext; September 26, 8 a.m.–noon; oil-based paint free; latex refused; Veolia pre-registration over 200 lbs), the Clean Sweep Voucher Program page, the alternatives page and its 2025 printable guide (PDF), the latex disposal sheet (PDF), the City of Baraboo prohibited-items reminder (PDF; Ordinance 11.07(4); Peterson Sanitation), the Village of Lake Delton recycling page, Dane County's Clean Sweep page (hours, fees, Maahic Way address), Wisconsin DNR, and PaintCare's listing. Sauk County pages were read in a browser. Conflicts: Sauk's 2025 guide lists Dane County's site at 7102 US Hwy 12 with hours 7 a.m.–2:45 p.m.; Dane County's own page says 7020 Maahic Way, 7:15 a.m.–3:15 p.m. (used). Lake Delton's page still describes two events a year. Not resolved: voucher office hours; 2027 Clean Sweep date; Sauk County does not list the towns it serves by name. Did not call anyone.
