THE LOCAL ANSWERTake liquid paint, latex or oil-based, to the La Crosse County Household Hazardous Materials Facility at 3202 Berlin Drive, Monday-Friday 8-4 (plus the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, April-October). It's free for county households, with no appointment needed under 200 pounds. Dried paint can go in your regular garbage.
In La Crosse, Wisconsin, leftover liquid paint goes to the La Crosse County Household Hazardous Materials Facility at 3202 Berlin Drive, on the county landfill complex off Hwy 16. It's open every weekday all year and takes latex and oil-based paint free from county households. Next door, a free Product Reuse Room gives away usable household products that came into the facility.
Weekdays all year, two Saturdays a month in season
The facility is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. year-round. From April through October it also opens the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon. From November 1 to March 31 there are no Saturday hours.
Both latex and oil-based paint are free here
Unlike Winnebago County near Oshkosh, La Crosse County takes liquid latex at no charge for its residents. Paint, stain, varnish and solvents are all on the free list. Bring a driver's license in case staff ask for proof you live in the county.
Onalaska, Holmen and West Salem use the same site
The program serves households anywhere in La Crosse County, so Onalaska, Holmen, West Salem and the county's towns all use this one facility on Berlin Drive. The county's pages list no second site.
Free paint at the Reuse Room
Staff put usable products that came into the facility in the Product Reuse Room at 3200 Berlin Drive, beside it. The county doesn't say which products, so paint isn't guaranteed. It's open weekdays 8-4 and everything is free. You sign a waiver, and you can't drop things off there directly.
Crossing the river won't help
Heth's Hardware Hank in La Crescent, Minnesota, is a PaintCare drop-off, but PaintCare lists it for Minnesota households and businesses only. Wisconsin residents should use the county facility.
