THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, 11234 Plano Rd., with your license and a utility bill; it's free for Dallas residents. It's open Tuesday 9–7:30, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30–5, and 2nd and 4th Saturdays 9–3. Small amounts of latex can be dried and trashed.
Dallas residents take paint to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center on Plano Road, just north of I-635. It's free with proof of address. Fort Worth's center does not serve Dallas.
One center, odd days
The center opens Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays. It's closed Fridays. Tuesday runs until 7:30 p.m., the best after-work option.
Dallas County, not just the city
Garland, Irving, Mesquite, Richardson and other member cities share this center. A suburb that isn't on the list pays at least $100, even if its address says Dallas.
Latex has a home option
The county's paint tips say latex can be dried with kitty litter and put in the regular trash. Oil-based paint should go to the center.
Five gallons per container
The center won't take containers over 5 gallons, so don't bring a 55-gallon drum. Keep cans sealed.
Don't drive to Fort Worth
Dallas is not one of the cities Fort Worth's center serves. It turns away cities that aren't on its list.
