THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint to the Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 1015 E. Chambers St., Tuesday–Friday 8–5 or Saturday 8–noon. It’s free with ID for households in Minnehaha, Lincoln, Lake, McCook and Turner counties, and takes latex and oil-based paint. Hardened latex can also go in your trash.
In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, leftover paint goes to the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1015 E. Chambers St., below the North Cliff Avenue hill. It’s free for households in Minnehaha County and four neighboring counties, and it takes both latex and oil-based paint. South Dakota has no PaintCare program, so paint stores won’t take paint back.
Tuesday to Saturday; call ahead for big loads
Drive in Tuesday–Friday 8–5 or Saturday 8–noon. The site is closed Sunday and Monday. The city says it is busiest from about 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Saturdays, so go early or late in the day. If you have a large load, call 605-367-8695 first for an appointment.
Five counties can use it, with ID
It’s free for homes in Minnehaha, Lincoln, Lake, McCook and Turner counties. Staff check your driver’s license or other ID and write down where you live before they unload.
Renters yes, landlords no
Tenants can bring their own paint any time. Property managers can’t bring paint gathered from rental units, and a business run from a home office can’t use the site either.
Dried latex goes in the trash
The city says cans of hardened latex paint can go in your regular garbage with the lid off. Sioux Falls uses private haulers, so ask yours if you’re unsure what it will pick up.
Pick up free products in the Reuse Room
Inside the facility, the Reuse Room gives away household and car-care products that staff have checked. You can take up to 3 items a week.
