THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to Under the Sink, 4001 S. 120th St., Wednesday–Friday (Saturdays by appointment). It’s for Douglas and Sarpy county households; oil-based paint is free and latex costs $1 a can. Or dry latex with kitty litter and put it in the trash.

In Omaha, Nebraska, leftover paint goes to Under the Sink, the household hazardous waste site the City of Omaha runs for Douglas and Sarpy counties. It’s at 4001 S. 120th St. and takes latex and oil-based paint. Oil-based paint is free. Latex costs $1 a can, or you can dry it and put it in the trash.

Wednesday to Friday, no appointment

Drive in Wednesday or Friday 9–4:45, or Thursday until 6:15. Saturday drop-off needs an appointment, which you book online or at 402-444-7465. The site is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Latex costs $1 a can; oil-based is free

Under the Sink charges $1 for each quart or larger can of latex or other water-based paint, and takes cards only. Oil-based paint, stain, varnish, thinner and spray paint are free.

One household per trip

You can only bring your own household’s paint. Under the Sink won’t take a load gathered from neighbors, family or friends, and it turns away anything from a business, including a home-based business.

Grab free paint at the ReStore

The ReStore inside the office entrance gives away products other people dropped off, which can include paint. You get 10 minutes, up to 50 pounds and 4 spray cans. You don’t need proof of residency to shop it.

Council Bluffs and other counties can’t use it

Under the Sink is only for Douglas and Sarpy county homes. If you live across the river in Iowa or in another Nebraska county, use your own county’s program.

Free pickup programs and other options

Nebraska has no PaintCare program, so paint stores won’t take it back for free. Under the Sink says latex is not hazardous and can go in the trash once dry. Its paint handout says to pour the paint into a box lined with newspaper and a layer of kitty litter, sand or dirt, stir, let it dry, then bag it with your household trash. Your trash must fit in your city-issued cart for FCC Environmental to pick it up. Usable paint can go to friends, neighbors or charities.

Sources and how we checked12

October 12, 2026: read Under the Sink’s home page, accepted and not-accepted lists, common questions, ReStore rules, location and holiday hours page, and its paint handout (dated March 2010, linked from the current site); Sarpy County’s Under the Sink page; Wasteline Omaha’s chemicals and paint page and collection FAQs; and Nebraska DWEE’s household hazardous waste release (the agency was NDEE when it was written). Under the Sink’s own pages don’t say what proof of residency it checks; PaintCare’s non-program listing says proof is required, so we tell readers to bring it. The paint handout also says empty metal cans can go in Omaha curbside recycling, but it is 16 years old and Wasteline’s current pages don’t confirm it, so we left it out. We couldn’t find an Omaha Habitat ReStore paint policy. Under the Sink lists no 2026 mobile events.
