KC Water Household Hazardous Waste Facility (Environmental Campus)

4707 Deramus Ave, Kansas City, MO 64120

Accepts
Paint is on KC Water’s accepted list, along with automotive fluids, batteries, light bulbs, cleaners, lawn and garden products, pesticides and pool chemicals. KC Water’s page just says “paint.” RecycleSpot, the regional program’s website, lists latex, oil-based and spray paint as household hazardous waste. Call 816-513-8400 if you want to be sure about a product.
Who can use it
Households in Kansas City, Mo., and the 34 other cities and towns on KC Water’s 2026 list, from Belton and Raymore to Liberty, Platte City and Richmond, plus named unincorporated communities in Clay, Jackson and Platte counties. No Kansas residents at all. No businesses, churches, schools, government agencies, nonprofits, home-based businesses, or materials used to keep up rental properties.
Hours
Drop-off Thursday and Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–4 p.m., for loads under 600 pounds. Loads over 600 pounds only on Wednesdays, by appointment. 2026 closures still ahead: Thanksgiving, Nov. 26–28, and the year-end shutdown from Dec. 21 to Jan. 5.
Load limits
No container bigger than 5 gallons. Loads over 600 pounds need a Wednesday appointment. Not taken: appliances, asbestos, ammunition and fireworks, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, medical waste, propane bottles over one pound, butane, Freon, tires and yard waste.
Fees
Free for residents of Kansas City, Mo., and the other participating communities on KC Water’s list.

Bring a driver’s license or utility bill that shows your address. Pull under the covered drive-through and stay in your vehicle; staff unload it. The free Swap Shop on site gives away reusable paint and other products: Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday 9–4, Thursday and Friday 9–6. Stock changes daily, so call first.

Lee’s Summit Resource Recovery Park (run by Summit Transfer)

2011 SE Hamblen Rd, Lee’s Summit, MO 64082

Accepts
“Paint and related products,” plus auto fluids, batteries, cleaners, lawn chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and pool chemicals. The page does not say latex vs. oil-based separately.
Who can use it
Households only. Businesses are turned away at the gate, and so are nonprofits, churches and material from two or more rental homes.
Hours
For residents of participating communities outside Lee’s Summit (including Kansas City): Monday–Wednesday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., no appointment. Lee’s Summit residents can come Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., plus the first Saturday of the month, 8 a.m.–2 p.m., by appointment. Closed Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1); open 7:30 a.m.–noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Load limits
100 pounds per visit for residents of participating communities (no limit for Lee’s Summit residents). No containers over 5 gallons. Not taken: ammunition, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, gas cylinders, asbestos, tires and electronics.
Fees
Free for Lee’s Summit residents and residents of participating MARC communities. People from non-participating communities pay $2.00 a pound.

Bring a valid ID showing your current city. A free store here gives away paint, spray paint and stain dropped off by others; check in at the scale house before you go to it. PaintCare’s locator still says this site can’t serve Kansas City or Independence residents, but KC Water’s page and this site’s own page say residents of participating communities can come Monday–Wednesday.

Kansas City rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take your paint to KC Water’s free drop-off at 4707 Deramus Ave. on a Thursday or Friday (9–6) or Saturday (9–4), with ID showing your Kansas City, Mo., address. Early in the week, the Lee’s Summit Resource Recovery Park takes up to 100 pounds Monday–Wednesday. Both are household-only.

Missouri has no paint recycling law, but Kansas City, Missouri, residents get a free option. KC Water runs a hazardous waste drop-off at 4707 Deramus Ave., open Thursday through Saturday, and it takes paint. The city is part of the MARC regional program, so you can also use the Lee’s Summit site early in the week. If you live across State Line in Kansas, these sites can’t take your paint.

Thursday to Saturday at Deramus Avenue

Drive under the covered portico at 4707 Deramus Ave. Thursday or Friday 9–6, or Saturday 9–4, and stay in your car while staff unload. No appointment is needed if your load is under 600 pounds. Bring a driver’s license or utility bill with your Kansas City, Mo., address.

Monday to Wednesday? Go to Lee’s Summit

KC Water says Kansas City residents can also use the Lee’s Summit Resource Recovery Park, 2011 SE Hamblen Rd. Non-Lee’s Summit residents can come Monday–Wednesday, 8–4, with a 100-pound limit, and it’s free for participating cities. Bring ID showing your city.

Shop for free paint first

Both sites give away usable products people drop off. KC Water’s Swap Shop often has paint; call 816-513-8400 because stock changes daily. Lee’s Summit’s free store lists paint, spray paint and stain.

Two Kansas City collection days left in 2026

KC Water lists mobile events on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026 at Ruskin High School, 7000 E 111th St., and Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026 at Manuel Career Tech Center, 1215 E. Truman Rd. Both run 8 a.m.–noon. The Sept. 19 event at Burns & McDonnell has already happened.

Landlords and Kansas residents need another option

KC Water won’t take materials used to maintain rental properties, or anything from home-based businesses, churches or schools. It also can’t take anything from Kansas residents. Wyandotte County residents call 913-573-5311 and Johnson County residents call 913-715-6907.

Free pickup programs and other options

There is no free store take-back in Missouri; PaintCare doesn’t run a program here. If your paint is still good, give it to a neighbor, church or theater group. For latex you don’t want to haul, Missouri DNR says you can mix in kitty litter, sand, shredded newspaper or paint hardener, let it dry with the lid off, then put it in the trash. Kansas City’s own trash rules say no liquids in the cart and send hazardous materials to the hazardous waste program, so make sure the paint is completely hard.

Keep paint in its own can with a tight lid; nothing bigger than 5 gallons. Box the cans upright in the trunk. Have your ID or a utility bill ready at the window. If you’re near 600 pounds, call 816-513-8400 for a Wednesday appointment instead.

Kansas City questions5
Is paint drop-off free in Kansas City, Missouri?

Yes, for households in Kansas City, Mo., and the other participating communities. Bring proof of where you live.

Do I need an appointment at Deramus Avenue?

Not for loads under 600 pounds. Heavier loads are taken only on Wednesdays by appointment; call 816-513-8400.

I live in Overland Park. Can I use the KC Water site?

No. KC Water can’t take anything from Kansas residents. Johnson County residents call 913-715-6907; Wyandotte County residents call 913-573-5311.

I manage a few rental houses. Can I bring paint from them?

Not to KC Water, which bars materials used to maintain rental properties. Lee’s Summit also turns away material from two or more rental homes. You’ll need a commercial hazardous waste company.

Is the site open over Thanksgiving and the holidays?

No. KC Water is closed Nov. 26–28, 2026, and from Dec. 21 through Jan. 5.

Sources and how we checked7

October 7, 2026: read KC Water’s household hazardous waste page (hours, Swap Shop, 2026 closures, mobile events, participating communities, rental and Kansas exclusions), the Lee’s Summit Resource Recovery Park page (updated June 2026), MARC’s HHW page, RecycleSpot’s hazardous waste page, Kansas City’s trash page and Missouri DNR’s paint guidance. PaintCare’s locator lists the Deramus site as a non-program site. Conflict: PaintCare’s Lee’s Summit listing says it can’t serve Kansas City or Independence residents, but KC Water’s page and Lee’s Summit’s own current page say participating-community residents can come Monday–Wednesday. We followed the two official pages. KC Water’s list just says “paint”; RecycleSpot, the regional program’s site, lists latex, oil and spray paint as household hazardous waste. Kansas City’s trash page says no liquids in the cart and sends hazardous materials to the hazardous waste program; it doesn’t mention dried latex by name, so the drying steps come from Missouri DNR. The Oct. 10 Ruskin High event should be moved to the past tense after it happens, and the Nov. 7 Manuel event after that date.

Checked October 7, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
