Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Willmar.

1404 SW 22nd St, Willmar, MN 56201
It's across from Bill Taunton Stadium. The county's own pages disagree on the number: the main page's heading, its recycling page and PaintCare say 1404 SW 22nd St, while the summary page and one line of the main page say 1400. There's a free reuse shelf, and the county recycling drop-site is next door.
2807 1st St S, Willmar, MN 56201

The county center lists weekday hours only. Sherwin-Williams at 2807 1st St S takes latex and oil-based paint, up to 5 gallons per visit, during store hours; call first to make sure it's open. It doesn't take thinner or spray paint, so bring those to the county center on a weekday.
Household leftovers go free to the center. Paint and chemicals from a farm or business go through the county's Clean Shop. You need a Minnesota waste ID already, and you must make less than 100 pounds of hazardous waste a year or no more than 220 pounds a month. Fees vary. Call 320-231-3587 first.
You can use the Willmar center. For house paint only, Litchfield Building Center at 124 E Commercial St is also on PaintCare's list, 5 gallons per visit. Thinner and other chemicals still go to Willmar.
The county landfill at 15650 Highway 71 NE near New London handles trash, and the county doesn't recommend self-hauling there. Its page doesn't list paint. Take paint to the hazardous waste center in Willmar instead.
Take leftover paint to the Kandiyohi County Household Hazardous Waste Center, 1404 SW 22nd St in Willmar, Monday–Friday, 8 am–4 pm; it's free for households. It serves seven counties, from Big Stone to Meeker. When the center is closed, Sherwin-Williams on 1st Street South takes up to 5 gallons per visit during store hours; call first.
In Willmar, Minnesota (Kandiyohi County), leftover paint goes to the county's Household Hazardous Waste Center on SW 22nd Street, across from Bill Taunton Stadium. It's a regional site for seven west-central counties and is open weekdays only. When it's closed, Sherwin-Williams on 1st Street South is on PaintCare's list for up to 5 gallons; call to check store hours.
Kandiyohi County's center takes household paint from Big Stone, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Meeker, Renville and Swift counties. So if you live in a nearby county without its own site, this is likely your place too.
The center is open Monday–Friday, 8 am–4 pm, with no Saturday hours listed. That's unlike Stearns County's site in Waite Park, which PaintCare lists as open Monday–Saturday. If you work days, a lunch-hour stop or the Sherwin-Williams store may be easier.
The center keeps a free reuse shelf of good products it receives, like cleaners and oils. New items come in daily. The county doesn't say paint is on it, so ask staff.
The county's recycling drop-site is at 1404 22nd Street SW, next to the hazardous waste building, same weekday hours. You can do both in one trip.
Renville County runs its own site in Olivia (PaintCare lists Mondays year-round, plus Thursdays April–November, weather permitting). Meeker County residents can also use Litchfield Building Center, 124 E Commercial St, 5 gallons per visit.
For 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare for a free pickup. Other PaintCare stores farther out include Litchfield Building Center in Litchfield and M and M Do it Best in Paynesville, each 5 gallons per visit. Renville County households also have the Renville County site at 32877 County Road 4 near Olivia, and PaintCare lists Renville among the counties served by Lyon County's center at 504 Fairgrounds Rd in Marshall.

Keep paint in its original labeled can with the lid on tight. Don't bring leaking or unlabeled cans. Put cans upright in a box. The county's guide says to dry out latex paint and put it in the trash when you can; empty cans, including empty spray cans, can go in the trash too. Neither the county nor its 211 listing says you need ID.
Full preparation checklist →At the Kandiyohi County Household Hazardous Waste Center, 1404 SW 22nd St, Monday–Friday, 8 am–4 pm. It's free for household paint. Call 320-231-3587 with questions.
No Saturday hours are listed. Sherwin-Williams at 2807 1st St S takes up to 5 gallons per visit during store hours. We didn't check whether it's open Saturdays, so call 320-235-0370 first.
Yes, if you live in Swift or Chippewa County. The county lists both among the seven counties it serves.
Maybe. Businesses and farms with a Minnesota waste ID that make small amounts of hazardous waste can use the county's Clean Shop. Call 320-231-3587 to get started. Fees vary.
The center has a free reuse shelf for usable products like cleaners and oils. The county doesn't say paint is on it, so ask.
Checked October 13, 2026 from Kandiyohi County pages, the county's disposal guide image (linked from the main page; the summary page's link to it is broken), a Minnesota 211 listing (last checked by 211 on March 9, 2026) and PaintCare's locator; no calls or visits. Kandiyohi's pages give both 1400 and 1404 SW 22nd St, and the two pages list different staff. The county includes Renville in its service area but PaintCare's Kandiyohi listing doesn't; PaintCare lists Renville under Lyon County's center instead. Container size and the 200-gallon limit come from PaintCare. We found no mobile collection dates, no city rule on paint in curbside trash, and didn't check store hours.
