In Warren, Ohio, the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District takes oil-based paint for free at its Trumbull Collection Facility on Enterprise Blvd, but only on Wednesdays from May through October. It does not take latex paint at all; you dry latex and put it in the trash. After October, Trumbull County residents drive oil-based paint to the district's Geauga facility near Chardon on a Friday.
Oil-based paint has a season here
The Trumbull Collection Facility at 5138 Enterprise Blvd NW takes oil-based paint, thinner and varnish free on Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., from May through October. From November through April, Wednesdays are limited to batteries, bulbs, propane tanks and fire extinguishers. All six 2026 Saturday mornings, the last on October 3, are over.
Winter oil paint goes to Merritt Road
The district's 2026 flyer tells Trumbull County residents to take flammable hazardous waste to the Geauga Collection Facility, 12685 Merritt Rd, Chardon, in the winter months. It is open Fridays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., all year and is free for residents of both counties. Its last 2026 Saturday morning is set for October 24, 9 a.m.-noon. Call 800-707-2673 with questions.
Latex is a trash item, once it's solid
The district does not take latex as hazardous waste because it isn't hazardous. Dry it one of three ways: leave the lid off for an inch or two of paint, stir in an equal amount of cat litter, sawdust, plaster of Paris or Oil-dry, or pour one-inch layers into a plastic-lined box. Then bag it with your weekly trash. Dried cans can go in the trash too.
Warren's city trash rules are stricter on paper
The City of Warren's Environmental Services FAQ says no paint, flammable materials or liquid waste in your container. Liquid paint is clearly out. Before setting out dried latex, call Environmental Services at 330-841-2561 (642 S. Park Ave) so the crew doesn't leave it behind.
Good paint can go to a second home
The district suggests donating usable paint to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore or to the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County, which takes usable paint for its painting projects. Contact either first for drop-off instructions.
