THE LOCAL ANSWERDry latex paint with kitty litter or paint hardener and put it in your Rumpke trash cart with the lid off. For oil-based paint, stain or thinner, call 800-553-6763 to book an appointment at the Shelby County Recycling Center, 1600 Riverside Dr; the last 2026 dates are set for October 20 and 27. It costs at least $1 a pound, cash or check, and the program runs only April through October.
In Sidney, Ohio (Shelby County), the place for oil-based paint, stain and thinner is the Shelby County Recycling Center at 1600 Riverside Drive. The North Central Ohio (NCO) Solid Waste District runs paid hazardous waste appointments there, April through October; PaintCare lists them as Tuesdays. Latex paint is easier: the city and the district both say to dry it out and put it in your Rumpke trash cart.
Appointments at the Riverside Drive recycling center
NCO's Shelby site works by appointment only, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the dates in its 2026 flyer. Call 800-553-6763 with a written list of what you're bringing. The last 2026 dates are set for October 20 and October 27. Plan on at least $1.00 a pound, paid in cash or by check.
Sidney switched to Rumpke this summer
Rumpke took over city trash and recycling on June 29, 2026; the old Republic bags were collected only until September 30. The city says Rumpke can't take liquids or hazardous items and points you to the solid waste district. Rumpke's own guide says latex is fine at the curb once it's solid, mixed with cat litter or sawdust.
The recycling bins and transfer station won't help
The recycling center's weekday drop-off lists paint cans and aerosol cans as not accepted. The Republic-run Shelby County Transfer Station shares the 1600 Riverside Dr address, but NCO lists it as a trash site, not a paint site. Paint goes in only through an appointment.
Same program for Anna, Botkins, Fort Loramie and Jackson Center
NCO serves all of Shelby County. Its curbside list names Anna, Botkins, Fort Loramie, Jackson Center, Kettlersville and Russia, and its recycling drop-offs include Houston, Swanders and McCartysville. Jackson Center's village page sends residents to the same 800-553-6763 booking line and repeats the dry-the-latex rule.
Ask the Sidney ReStore before donating
Habitat for Humanity of Miami and Shelby Counties runs a ReStore at 1024 Wapakoneta Ave (937-365-4347). Its listing doesn't say whether it takes paint. Call before bringing unopened cans.
