From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.
Book H-MRF and list both. Paint stores don’t collect solvents, so an appointment at 15 Woods Road suits this mixed load better than a paint-only shop.
Use the lid-off curbside steps only for items sanitation allows, and keep it out of mixed recycling. If you can’t tell whether it’s regular latex, ask sanitation or the hazardous waste helpline.
Count can sizes and separate labeled house paint from spray cans, thinner and damaged cans. H-MRF takes 25 gallons per visit. More can go to the November 7 Playland event if you preregister, as required for 25+ gallons of liquid. For far more, ask PaintCare about a pickup.
For liquid paint, book Westchester’s H-MRF in Valhalla (25 gallons per visit, photo ID) or use the free Household Recycling Day at Playland, Rye, Saturday, November 7, 2026. City trash takes only hardened paint, lid off, the can set beside the garbage in plain view.
Choose a county appointment, the Playland drive-up or a paint-only store trip; no PaintCare site is inside New Rochelle. The city also collects hardened paint at the curb under its own rules.
The 2026 DPW guide says no liquid paint. Mix in an absorbent like cat litter and let it harden, usually a few days. On trash day, set the can out top off beside the garbage, not in a can or bag, so crews see it. Lids go in the garbage. The guide doesn’t mention oil paint, so ask first.
Paint cans can’t go in mixed recycling, even empty. Containers that held any hazardous material are banned too, so a thinner or stripper can doesn’t follow the hardened-paint rule. Unsure? Call sanitation at 914-235-5830 (7 a.m.–3 p.m.).
Westchester’s second and last fall 2026 Household Recycling Day is Saturday, November 7, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., at Playland Park, 1 Playland Parkway, Rye. The first is November 1 at Peekskill’s RESCO site. It’s free and first come, first served; call 914-813-5425 to preregister 25 gallons or more of liquid. No business or institution waste.
PaintCare lists none in New Rochelle. Closest: Sherwin-Williams on White Plains Road, Eastchester, and Kawers Paint and Glass, Tuckahoe, about 3–4 miles away, 5 gallons per visit each. Call first. Bigger loads fit H-MRF’s 25 gallons.
For a small can in good shape, a PaintCare store in a nearby village may beat driving to Valhalla; call it first. A contractor or other business can ask the county helpline whether it counts as a very small business (CESQG) for H-MRF’s first-Thursday business slots, or use PaintCare’s business options. Don’t book business waste as household waste at a client’s home.

Keep liquids in labeled original cans, lids tight, upright in a sturdy box. Bring current government photo ID to H-MRF. List paint, solvents and other chemicals when booking; don’t combine them.
Full preparation checklist →No. Paint cans are banned from mixed recycling here, metal or not.
Yes. Only seven towns outside Refuse Disposal District No. 1 pay: Somers, North Salem, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, Bedford, North Castle and New Castle.
No. Household slots are for county residents with photo ID. A CESQG business can book the first-Thursday business day at 914-813-5425, or use PaintCare’s business options for paint.
On October 6, 2026 we re-read the 2026 DPW guide (hardening, curb setup, banned containers, sanitation hours), the county H-MRF page (hours, ID, paying towns, business days), the county paint page and the fall event page. Store limits and the lack of an in-city site are from PaintCare’s October 6 locator. We didn’t call or visit.
