Sherwin-Williams on State Route 11 takes up to 10 gallons a visit, so one stop should do it. Call first to make sure it has room.
The stores won't take them. Call the landfill at 518-483-8270, ext. 1, about the next collection day, and keep them sealed until then.
The 2021 county guidance says hardened latex can go in your household trash. Liquid latex can go to either Route 11 store.
Ask PaintCare for a free large-volume pickup instead of making many store trips. In New York, PaintCare says even businesses too big for its small-business limits can use the pickup for oil-based paint; contact PaintCare for details.
Take house paint to Sherwin-Williams at 3408 State Route 11, which PaintCare lists for up to 10 gallons a visit, or Ward Lumber at 3240 State Route 11 (5 gallons). For thinner, spray cans and other chemicals, Franklin County holds occasional collection days at the landfill in Constable; the latest one we found was September 7, 2024, so call 518-483-8270, ext. 1, to ask about the next one.
Malone, the Franklin County seat in far northern New York, has two PaintCare stores on State Route 11 and no year-round hazardous waste site. The county's solid waste authority runs the landfill in Constable and transfer stations including Malone's, but none is listed as a paint drop-off. St. Lawrence County's Canton paint day is for St. Lawrence residents only.
Sherwin-Williams (518-483-2271) takes 10 gallons a visit and Ward Lumber (518-483-8888) takes 5, per PaintCare. Both take latex and oil-based paint, stain and varnish from homes and businesses. Neither takes spray cans.
The Town of Constable posted a Franklin County residents-only collection for Saturday, September 7, 2024, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Regional Landfill, 828 County Route 20. You had to pre-register at 518-483-8270, ext. 1, and no commercial waste was taken. We found no 2025 or 2026 date.
The 2021 landfill collection, run with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and open to tribal members, took oil-based paint, thinner, turpentine, varnish and aerosols but not latex. It said to harden latex with kitty litter, Speedy Dry or sand and put it in household trash. New York's PaintCare program began in May 2022, so latex can now go to the Route 11 stores too.
The authority's Malone transfer station is at 326 Brand Road, according to state DEC records, and the Malone Telegram reported it was fully renovated. No source we found lists paint there. Ask before bringing any.
In the south end of the county, PaintCare lists Coakley Home and Hardware at 622 Lake Flower Avenue in Saranac Lake and Aubuchon Hardware at 65 Lake Street in Tupper Lake, each 5 gallons a visit.
For bigger loads, split them between the two Route 11 stores or make more than one trip. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare for a free pickup. Canton's monthly county paint day is for St. Lawrence County residents only. The DANC chemical collections are run by St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties, not Franklin County, so call DANC at 315-661-3233 before planning to use one.

Keep paint in its original, labeled can with the lid on tight. Stores won't take leaking, empty or unlabeled cans or spray paint. If you hold chemicals for a landfill collection day, keep them sealed and dry, and pre-register when a date is posted.

No. It's for St. Lawrence County residents only. Malone residents should use the Route 11 stores.
Yes, PaintCare lists both Route 11 stores for businesses. Oil-based paint from a business must meet PaintCare's small-business limits.
October 16, 2026: checked PaintCare locator data for Malone, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake; PaintCare's New York, large-volume and business-limits pages; the Town of Constable's 2024 collection notice; the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's 2021 notice; a 2021 DEC annual report for the Malone transfer station; and a Malone Telegram article on the landfill (the full text is behind a paywall). Franklin County's website has no solid waste page, and we found no website for the County of Franklin Solid Waste Management Authority. No 2025 or 2026 collection date was found; search results showed 2025 Constable notices, but those pages no longer load. Paint rules from 2021 may have changed. Transfer station hours and paint policy weren't found. Store hours weren't checked. We made no phone calls.
Checked October 16, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
