Don't bring liquid paint here on a normal day. The county's transfer station lists don't include paint, and its guide says paint cans aren't bulk metal. For questions, call the Recycling Info-Line at 518-736-5504 or the main office at 518-736-5501.

Take liquid house paint and stain to a Comrie Avenue store. Store thinner and other chemicals in a safe spot until the county's 2027 hazardous waste day.
The county suggests drying it with cat litter, sand or sawdust and throwing it out with the lid off. City residents should check with the City Engineer's Office first, since the city's garbage page lists paint as not collected.
Landlords need a county commercial permit and can't use the transfer stations. Take house paint to Sherwin-Williams on North Comrie Avenue in several trips, or ask PaintCare for a pickup at 100 gallons or more.
Kingsboro Lumber on Meadow Street in Gloversville and Tanner Lumber in Broadalbin are PaintCare stores closer to home. Your county transfer station won't take paint either.
Take house paint, stain and varnish to Sherwin-Williams at 222 N Comrie Ave (PaintCare lists up to 15 gallons a visit) or Noble Ace Hardware at 130 S Comrie Ave (5 gallons); call first. Fulton County's hazardous waste day for thinner and other chemicals runs only in odd years, and the county says the next one is in the summer of 2027. Don't bring paint to the Mud Road transfer station.
Johnstown, in Fulton County, New York, has two stores on Comrie Avenue that take old paint for free through PaintCare. Fulton County's transfer stations don't take paint, and the county's hazardous waste day happens only in odd-numbered years, so the next one is in 2027. The Saratoga Springs and Albany guides cover other counties; their collection days don't apply here.
Both Johnstown PaintCare stores are on Comrie Avenue: Sherwin-Williams at 222 North (518-736-2200) and Noble Ace Hardware at 130 South (518-762-3658). PaintCare lists 15 gallons a visit at Sherwin-Williams, which is high for this area, so call to make sure. Anyone in New York can use them; you don't need a county permit.
Fulton County holds its free hazardous waste drop-off at 847 Mud Road only in odd-numbered years, in August, by appointment. The county's guide says the next one is in the summer of 2027 and tells you to store chemicals safely until then. No date is posted yet. Call the Recycling Info-Line, 518-736-5504.
The Landfill Transfer Station at 847 Mud Road serves the City of Johnstown, the Town of Johnstown and the City of Gloversville. It takes trash, recycling, bulk metal, textiles, motor oil, batteries and electronics with a permit sticker. Paint isn't on its list, and the county says paint cans don't go in the metal bin.
The county guide says you can dry small amounts of any paint with cat litter, sand or sawdust and put the can in household garbage with the lid off. But the City of Johnstown's garbage page lists paint as something it won't collect. Before you set dried cans at the curb, call the City Engineer's Office at 518-736-4014.
Town of Johnstown residents have no garbage pickup and can use either the Berkshire Transfer Station at 876 E. Fulton St. Ext. (Route 29A) or the Mud Road station. Berkshire also serves Bleecker and the Village and Town of Mayfield. Neither takes paint.
PaintCare also lists Kingsboro Lumber at 17 Meadow St in Gloversville (518-773-7939, 10 gallons a visit), Tanner Lumber at 4 N 2nd Ave in Broadalbin (5 gallons) and Allen and Palmer Do It Best Hardware at 112 N Main St in Northville (10 gallons). For 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare for a free pickup.

Keep paint in its original labeled can with the lid on tight. Stores won't take spray cans, or leaking, unlabeled or empty cans. Don't put paint cans in single-stream recycling; the county says they don't belong there. Empty spray cans can go in the bin.
Full preparation checklist →At Sherwin-Williams, 222 N Comrie Ave, or Noble Ace Hardware, 130 S Comrie Ave, during store hours. Both are PaintCare drop-offs and free. Call first.
The county holds it in odd-numbered years, in August, by appointment. Its guide says the next one is in the summer of 2027. No date is posted yet; call 518-736-5504.
No. Paint isn't on the county's transfer station list. Take liquid house paint to a PaintCare store instead.
The county says dried paint can go in household garbage with the lid off. The city's garbage page lists paint as something it won't collect, so call the City Engineer's Office at 518-736-4014 before setting it out.
No. The county says contractors and businesses can't use its transfer stations. The Comrie Avenue stores take house paint from businesses. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare for a free pickup.
Checked October 16, 2026 from the City of Johnstown's garbage page, Fulton County's Department of Solid Waste, transfer station, Landfill and Berkshire station, recycling and policy guide pages, and PaintCare's New York page, large-volume page and locator data; no calls or visits. The county's policy guide still mentions an August 14, 2021 date in one entry, but its main entry says the next hazardous waste day is in summer 2027, which matches the odd-year rule on the transfer station pages. The city page says paint isn't collected as garbage, while the county allows dried paint in household garbage; we didn't find a city rule on dried paint. PaintCare's 15-gallon limit at Sherwin-Williams is unusual and wasn't confirmed by the store. We didn't check store hours.
