Because one city page welcomes labeled paint and another bans it, call 575-624-6746 before you haul liquid paint. The city's Recycling page tells visitors to stop at the weight station and tell the attendant what they're bringing. The Solid Waste page lists the landfill as ZIP 88203; the Landfill Services page gives 88201 for the same address.
Stir a paint hardener into each can until it's solid, bag the cans and put them in your curbside cart. The Residential Collections page allows paint in curbside containers only after this step.
Call 575-624-6746 first. The Solid Waste page says labeled oil, gasoline and paints are taken free at the landfill, but the Landfill Services page bans paint and highly flammable substances. Don't put either in a cart.
County compactor sites list paint, liquids and hazardous waste as unacceptable. Call the Roswell landfill at 575-624-6746 first; it serves Chaves County residents, but its pages disagree on whether paint is taken.
City ordinance makes contractors and remodelers responsible for taking their own waste to the landfill, but the landfill refuses chemicals from commercial businesses. The contractor should use a licensed hazardous waste company for liquid paint.
Harden leftover paint with a paint hardener, then put it in your Roswell curbside cart; the city allows paint in carts only after that step. For liquid paint you can't harden, call the Roswell Municipal Landfill at 575-624-6746 before you go, because one city page says it takes labeled paint free and another lists paint as prohibited. Chaves County compactor sites don't take paint at all.
Roswell, New Mexico (Chaves County), not Roswell, Georgia, has no household hazardous waste center or collection day that we could find. Paint goes either into the trash once hardened or to the Roswell Municipal Landfill on West Brasher Road. The city's pages disagree on whether the landfill takes liquid paint. New Mexico has no PaintCare program, so stores don't take paint back.
Roswell's Residential Collections page says flammables and liquids stay out of containers, and "paint may be placed in containers only after it has been treated with a paint hardener." That line is in the curbside roll-out rules. The alley-container rules repeat the no-liquids line but don't mention hardened paint. The Solid Waste page goes further: it says paints shall not be placed in any type of trash container. If you have an alley container, or want to be sure, call 575-624-6746.
The Solid Waste page says oil, gasoline and paints are accepted at the landfill free of charge if clearly labeled. The Landfill Services page lists paint as prohibited, along with highly flammable or toxic substances and motor oil. Neither is dated. Call 575-624-6746 before you haul liquid paint.
Chaves County's free compactor sites at 3904 Railroad Ln. and 908 Wiggins Rd. in Roswell, 7331 Miller Rd. in Dexter and 6486 Templeton Rd. in Midway take household-type trash only. The county lists paint, liquids and hazardous waste as unacceptable. The county doesn't carve out hardened paint. Rural households can call the city landfill, which serves Roswell and Chaves County residents, at 575-624-6746.
Roswell residents with a water bill dated within 30 days and ID get one free landfill load a month, up to a pickup or 10-foot trailer. The waiver doesn't cover tires, construction material, shingles, e-waste or loads over 300 pounds. The landfill pages don't say whether hardened paint can ride along, so ask. The 2026-27 fee sheet lists a $9.81 residential minimum for the first 300 pounds otherwise.
KRQE reported that Roswell's free spring cleanup events in April 2025, at DeBremond Stadium, RIAC Park and the landfill, did not take tires, construction materials, batteries or liquids. The story said nothing about paint, so don't count on a cleanup day for it.
New Mexico has no PaintCare program, and PaintCare's locator data lists no Roswell or Chaves County site. The New Mexico Environment Department tells residents to contact their municipal, county, solid waste authority or tribal program. Its fact sheet (revised 2021) also says non-residents could bring household hazardous waste to Albuquerque's collection center for $65 per car, up to 55 gallons, by appointment with a week's notice on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call before relying on it. In Roswell that means the City Solid Waste Department (575-624-6746). Give usable paint to a neighbor or community group before you harden it. Businesses can't bring commercial or industrial chemicals to the landfill and need a licensed hazardous waste company; contractors and remodelers are responsible under city ordinance for taking their own waste to the landfill. For motor oil, the city names Jiffy Lube at 2613 N. Main St.

Stir a paint hardener into the can until the paint is solid; the city allows paint in curbside carts only after that treatment. Bag it before it goes into your 90-gallon cart; the city wants all waste bagged. Put carts at the curb by 5 a.m. on pickup day. For a landfill trip, keep paint in the original labeled can, since the Solid Waste page says items must be clearly labeled, and tarp the load. Get there before 3:45 p.m. on weekdays or 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, the last entry times.
Full preparation checklist →Harden it and put it in your curbside cart, or call the Roswell Municipal Landfill at 575-624-6746 about liquid paint. The landfill is at 3006 W Brasher Rd., open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
City pages disagree. One says labeled paints are accepted free; the landfill's own page lists paint as prohibited. Call 575-624-6746 before you go.
The Residential Collections page says paint can go in curbside containers once it's been treated with a paint hardener. Liquids and flammables aren't allowed. The Solid Waste page says paints shall not go in any trash container, so call 575-624-6746 if you're unsure.
We found none on the city's or county's pages. Roswell's spring cleanup events in 2025 didn't accept liquids.
The city lists New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. No Sunday hours are listed.
October 17, 2026: read the City of Roswell Solid Waste, Landfill Services, Residential Collections, Residential Bulk Service, Commercial Collection, Holiday Schedule and Recycling pages and the July 2026-June 2027 tipping fee sheet; Chaves County's compactor page (opened in a browser because curl was blocked); NMED's household hazardous waste fact sheet; and KRQE's April 2025 cleanup story. Checked PaintCare locator data: no Roswell or Chaves County listing; New Mexico has no PaintCare program. Searches for 'Roswell' mostly returned Roswell, Georgia. Peer review added the Solid Waste page line that paints shall not be placed in any type of trash container, which conflicts with the hardener rule. Unresolved: whether the landfill takes liquid paint (the Solid Waste and Landfill Services pages conflict); whether hardened paint may go in alley containers; the landfill ZIP (88201 vs 88203); the first-load fee ($9.81 for 300 lb on the fee sheet vs $9.92 for 500 lb on the landfill page); and compactor site hours (not published). No household hazardous waste event was found.
