Start with these

Jersey City DPW, Linden Avenue East (oil-based paint; call first)

13-15 Linden Ave E, Jersey City, NJ 07305

Accepts
Oil-based paint. The same desk also takes used motor oil and antifreeze (5-gallon limit per person) and tires. The city says latex paint no longer needs to come here.
Who can use it
Jersey City residents. Bring proof that you live in Jersey City.
Hours
The city’s March 2025 sanitation guide says Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m. The city’s current web page says something different: “The next hazardous waste drop off date is: TBD,” and residents call 201-547-4400 to set up a drop-off. Call before you go.
Load limits
The city guide lists no limit for oil-based paint. The 5-gallon-per-person limit it lists is for motor oil and antifreeze. Spray paint, thinner and stain are not named; ask before bringing them.
Fees
No fee is listed for paint. Tires cost money after the first four.

The city’s web page calls this DPW headquarters at 15-17 Linden Ave E. Its printed guide and Hudson County use 13-15 Linden Avenue East. Ask which entrance to use when you call 201-547-4400. Weekday paint drop-off comes from the 2025 guide; the web page now treats hazardous waste drop-off as a scheduled date that hasn’t been set.

Which option fits your Jersey City cleanout?4
02

You have oil-based trim paint and need it gone this week

Call the DPW at 201-547-4400 and ask when you can bring it. The city’s 2025 guide says 13-15 Linden Avenue East on weekdays, 8 a.m.–3 p.m., with a bill or ID showing your Jersey City address. Its web page now says the next drop-off date is “TBD,” so don’t go without calling. If the DPW can’t take it, the October 31 county day at the same address will.

04

You’re a contractor finishing a job in Jersey City

HCIA’s days are closed to businesses. New Jersey lets businesses manage oil-based paint, lacquer, stain and spray paint as universal waste: original or labeled containers marked “Universal Waste – Oil-based Finish,” sent within a year to a company or site allowed to take it. Ask a hauler before you load the truck.

Jersey City rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Bring latex or oil-based paint to Hudson County’s free hazardous waste day at 13-15 Linden Avenue East on Saturday, October 31, 2026, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., with proof you live in Hudson County. Before then, call the Jersey City DPW at 201-547-4400 about dropping off oil-based paint; its 2025 guide says weekdays 8 a.m.–3 p.m., but its web page says the next date is “TBD.” Or dry latex and put it out with your garbage, lid off.

Jersey City, in Hudson County, New Jersey, has two options for paint. Hudson County’s free hazardous waste day comes to the DPW complex on Linden Avenue East on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and it now takes latex as well as oil-based paint. The city’s 2025 guide also lets residents drop off oil-based paint at the DPW on weekdays, but its web page now says to call first.

Oil-based paint: call the DPW first

The city’s March 2025 sanitation guide says oil-based paint goes to the DPW Main Office, 13-15 Linden Avenue East, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m., with proof that you live in Jersey City. The city’s web page now says the next hazardous waste drop-off date is “TBD” and to call 201-547-4400 to set one up. Call before you drive over.

Latex: dry it, or bring it on October 31

Jersey City says latex paint no longer has to come to the DPW. Its guide says rinsed-out latex cans with the lids off go to the curb with your garbage. HCIA says you can dry leftover latex in the can for the trash, or bring it to a Hudson County hazardous waste day.

Three Hudson County days are still ahead

HCIA’s 2026 calendar lists Saturday, October 10 at the Hoboken DPW, 1500 Madison St; Sunday, October 18 at Secaucus High School, 11 Millridge Rd; and Saturday, October 31 back at 13-15 Linden Ave in Jersey City. All run 9 a.m.–1 p.m., rain or shine. The June 6 Jersey City day has passed.

HCIA’s web page is out of date

The household hazardous waste page on hcia.org still shows 2025 dates, including November 1 in Jersey City. Use the 2026 calendar PDF on that same page instead, and call 201-324-6222 if anything looks off.

Paint cans don’t go in recycling

Jersey City’s recycling list says all cans except paint cans. Don’t put a paint can in the commingled bin, even when it’s empty.

Free pickup programs and other options

New Jersey has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don’t take leftovers for free. If you miss the fall 2026 county days, call the DPW at 201-547-4400 about dropping off oil-based paint. Give good latex paint to a neighbor or a community group. Businesses can’t use the county days; they need a hazardous waste company.

Keep oil-based paint in its original labeled can with the lid on tight, and bring proof of a Jersey City address. For latex you’re throwing out, stir in cat litter or a hardener, let it go solid, and set it out with the lid off on your trash night (5–7 p.m. the evening before pickup). For a county day, pack everything in a box so nothing tips over.

Jersey City questions5
Where can I drop off oil-based paint in Jersey City?

Call the DPW at 201-547-4400 first. The city’s 2025 guide says 13-15 Linden Avenue East, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m., with proof of residency, but its web page now says the next drop-off date is “TBD.” You can also bring it to HCIA’s free county day there on Saturday, October 31, 2026, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Can latex paint go in the garbage?

Yes, if it’s dry. HCIA says latex isn’t hazardous and can be dried in the can and thrown out. Jersey City’s guide says rinsed-out latex cans with the lids off can go out with regular garbage.

Does the Hudson County hazardous waste day take latex paint?

Yes. HCIA’s 2026 Environmental Guide says latex paint is accepted at its collection days. Older flyers and some listings still say it isn’t, so call 201-324-6222 if you’re unsure.

Can I go to the Hoboken or Secaucus day if I live in Jersey City?

HCIA says the days are free to Hudson County residents, and both towns are in Hudson County. Call 201-324-6222 to confirm before you drive over.

Can my painting business use these drop-offs?

Not the county days: HCIA says businesses are not permitted. The DPW drop-off is described for residents. New Jersey lets a business handle oil-based paint as universal waste, in labeled containers sent to a company allowed to take it.

Sources and how we checked11

October 7, 2026: read Jersey City’s Division of Sanitation and recycling pages and the March 2025 sanitation guide PDF linked from them (older 2016–2017 versions said 9 a.m.–3 p.m.; we used the newest). Read HCIA’s household hazardous waste page (still showing 2025 dates), its 2026 calendar PDF and 2026 Environmental Guide, NJ DEP’s 2026 debris FAQ and universal waste slides. PaintCare’s locator lists the Jersey City, Hoboken and Secaucus HCIA days; its Secaucus entry says both that latex is accepted and that it isn’t, so we followed HCIA’s 2026 guide. Unresolved: the city’s web page says the next hazardous waste date is “TBD” while its guide describes weekday oil-paint drop-off; the address appears as both 13-15 and 15-17 Linden Ave E; whether the DPW takes spray paint, stain or thinner; and whether HCIA sets a gallon limit. Peer review, October 7, 2026: the sanitation web page still says “The next hazardous waste drop off date is: TBD” at 15-17 Linden Ave E and to call 201-547-4400, while the 2025 guide it links says weekdays 8 a.m.–3 p.m. at 13-15. The guide now leads with the October 31 county day and tells readers to call before using the DPW. HCIA’s 2026 guide (page 12) and calendar were reread: latex accepted, free, Hudson residents only, no businesses; October 10, 18 and 31 are upcoming.

Checked October 7, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
