THE LOCAL ANSWER

Call 417-255-2330 to book a Monday drop-off for oil-based paint at 1853 Old Airport Rd.; it's open April through October only and free for households in seven counties. Latex paint isn't taken, so dry it and put it in your trash.

In West Plains, Missouri (Howell County), oil-based paint goes to the West Plains Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Facility, 1853 Old Airport Rd. It's free, but it's open only on Mondays from April through October, and only by appointment: call 417-255-2330. It serves households in seven south-central Missouri counties. Latex paint is not taken; dry it and put it in your trash. Missouri has no PaintCare program, so there's no store take-back program for paint.

Mondays only, and only in season

Drop-offs happen on Mondays, April through October, by appointment. The brochure gives no last date for the season, so call 417-255-2330 to check. From November through March, store oil-based paint safely and call again in the spring.

Seven counties share it

The brochure opens the site to households in Howell, Douglas, Oregon, Ozark, Shannon, Texas and Wright counties, and Missouri DNR lists the same seven. The City of Houston in Texas County posts the brochure on its website. Springfield's center doesn't serve these counties.

No latex, no empty cans, no propane

Latex paint, empty containers, propane cylinders, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are on the not-accepted list. Dry latex at home instead and put it in the trash.

Spring Cleanup Week won't take paint

The city's 2026 Spring Cleanup Week ran April 20–24 and was for extra trash, furniture, appliances and yard waste. The city said hazardous waste would not be collected. Paint has to go through the Monday drop-off.

Find the right gate

The city lists its Transfer Station as 1853 Old Airport Rd., 1851 Old Airport Road and 1851 Goodhard Drive on different pages. The hazardous waste brochure, the Sanitation office, the August 2026 storm debris notice and Missouri DNR all use 1853 Old Airport Rd. Ask where to pull in when you book.

Free pickup programs and other options

Dry latex paint by mixing in kitty litter, shredded newspaper, sand or paint hardener, then put it in your trash. Missouri DNR says latex is not hazardous once it's solid. The Transfer Station (417-256-6254) takes yard waste, tires, roofing and construction waste for a fee; its page doesn't list paint. PaintCare's nearest other listing, Baxter County's drop-off in Mountain Home, Arkansas, is for Baxter County households only. Businesses can't use the West Plains site and should hire a licensed hazardous waste company.

Before you call, make a list of each product and about how much you have. Keep paint in its original cans, or label any other container by hand. Never mix two products together. Put a leaking can inside a larger container that doesn't leak.

Sources and how we checked9

October 16, 2026: read the West Plains Household Hazardous Waste brochure (hosted on the City of Houston's site and linked by PaintCare and Missouri DNR), the City of West Plains Transfer Station, Sanitation and Sanitation contact pages, the city's 2026 Spring Cleanup Week and August 2026 storm debris notices, Missouri DNR's paint guidance and its HHW facility map data, and PaintCare's listings near West Plains. Unresolved: no gallon limit is posted. The brochure PDF was created in July 2021; the city's Transfer Station page still lists hazardous waste for April-October, but no 2026 schedule is posted. The brochure names the South Central Solid Waste Management District counties but lists 'Oregon' twice and leaves out Ozark in one panel; its cover, PaintCare and Missouri DNR include Ozark County, so we list seven counties. The city's own pages give three different addresses for the Transfer Station. The city's site does not publish its own hazardous waste page; the Transfer Station page only says 'April-October'. We found no official 2026 date for the last Monday of the season, so we tell readers to call.
