Accepts
The county says it takes 'almost all chemical items from a residential house,' such as aerosols, batteries, used oil, gasoline, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, garden chemicals, household cleaners and fluorescent bulbs, plus small electronics like computers, monitors, printers, radios and TVs. Latex paint is on its 'not accepted' list. The county's page doesn't name oil-based paint, and neither does the regional solid waste district's page. Call 660-747-2666 to confirm oil-based paint before you bring it.
Who can use it
Any Johnson County resident. Business and nonprofit waste is not allowed. Missouri DNR's map says the site serves Johnson and Lafayette counties, but the county's own page says Johnson County residents.
Hours
Open on set days from April to October only; the county says 'once a month from April - October.' For 2026 it listed Saturdays April 18, May 16, June 20 and September 19 and a final Saturday in October (9 a.m.-1 p.m.), plus Fridays July 17 and August 14 (5-9 p.m.). The 2026 season ends in October, and the next season starts in April. The county hasn't posted 2027 dates.
Load limits
Not taken: latex paint, unlabeled items, explosives, ammunition, asbestos, smoke alarms, radioactive or medical waste, tires, large appliances and anything with freon. No quantity limit is posted. PaintCare's locator listing says empty, dry or leaking paint cans aren't taken.
Fees
Free for Johnson County residents, the county says.

The site is the red building across from the county Road & Bridge Department, which is at 335 E. North St. It is not open between collection days. Questions go to the county's household hazardous waste coordinator at the Emergency Management office, 660-747-2666.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

Dry out latex paint with kitty litter or a hardener and put the solid can in your regular trash; Johnson County's hazardous waste site won't take latex. For oil-based paint, the county site is the red building at 326 E. North St., free for county residents on set days from April to October; call 660-747-2666 first, since its list doesn't name oil-based paint. The 2026 season ends in October, so keep oil-based cans sealed until the county posts its spring dates.

This guide is for Warrensburg, Missouri, in Johnson County. Johnson County Emergency Management runs the area's household hazardous waste site, a red building at 326 E. North St. across from the county Road & Bridge Department. It opens only on set days from April to October, it's free for Johnson County residents, and it won't take latex paint. Its 2026 season ends in October, and the next one starts in April. Latex gets dried out and goes in the trash.

Latex: dry it, then use your Constable trash cart

The county lists latex paint as something it won't take. Missouri DNR says water-based paint isn't hazardous once it's solid. Stir in kitty litter, sand, shredded newspaper or a paint hardener, leave the lid off away from kids and pets, then close the can and put it in your regular trash. In city limits that's the red-lid Constable Sanitation cart.

Oil-based paint: call the county before you load up

The county's site takes 'almost all chemical items from a residential house' and is free for anyone living in Johnson County. Its page never names oil-based paint, though; latex is the only paint on its 'not accepted' list. Missouri has no PaintCare program, and PaintCare's locator only repeats the latex rule, so it doesn't settle the question. Call 660-747-2666 to confirm before you bring oil-based paint or stain.

The 2026 season ends in October

In 2026 the county listed Saturdays April 18, May 16, June 20 and September 19 (9-1), two Friday evenings, July 17 and August 14 (5-9), and a final Saturday in October. After that the site is closed until its next April-October season. The county hasn't posted 2027 dates.

Many Warrensburg residents didn't know it existed

In the survey for the city's 2023 Solid Waste Management Plan, 713 people answered whether they'd ever used the county collection at 326 E. North St.: 35% said no and 30% said they didn't know the county held these events. The plan notes the nearest compost site and recycling plant are more than 45 miles away and there's no transfer station within 20 miles.

Kansas City's program isn't for Warrensburg

KC Water's free household hazardous waste program covers Kansas City and a list of 2026 partner towns. Warrensburg isn't on it. The 'Johnson County' facility KC Water lists (913-715-6907) is listed with Wyandotte County and Olathe, Kansas, and is in Johnson County, Kansas, not your county.

Free pickup programs and other options

Missouri has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don't take old paint back. For latex, drying it for the trash is the normal option all year. For oil-based paint, the county site is the only public option we found for Warrensburg; call 660-747-2666 to confirm it takes oil-based paint, and store the cans until its next April-October season. City trash service, run with Constable Sanitation, costs $32 a month as of October 1, 2026, and covers city limits only. Its monthly bulky pickup is for one large item like a dresser or grill, not paint. Businesses and nonprofits can't use the county site and need a hazardous waste company.

Keep oil-based paint in its original can with the label showing; the county won't take unlabeled items. Tap lids shut and stand cans upright in a box. Don't bring empty or leaking cans. For latex, open the can in a garage or shed, mix in litter or hardener until it won't pour, and let it sit a few days before it goes in the cart.

Warrensburg questions5
Where can I take oil-based paint in Warrensburg, MO?

Johnson County's household hazardous waste site, the red building at 326 E. North St., is the public option for household chemicals, on set days from April to October. It's free for Johnson County residents. Its page doesn't name oil-based paint, so call 660-747-2666 to confirm first.

Does the Johnson County site take latex paint?

No. Latex is on the county's 'not accepted' list. Dry it with kitty litter, sand or a hardener and put it in your trash once it's solid.

When is the next collection day?

The county's 2026 season ends in October. The site opens again for its next April-October season, and the county hasn't posted 2027 dates yet. Check the county's Household Hazardous Waste page or call 660-747-2666 in the spring.

I live outside city limits. Can I still use it?

Yes, if you live in Johnson County. The county site is open to any county resident. City trash service is only inside Warrensburg city limits, though.

Can my business or church drop off paint?

No. The county says business and nonprofit waste isn't accepted.

Sources and how we checked11

October 16, 2026: read Johnson County's Household Hazardous Waste page and FAQ, its Emergency Management page and calendar entry for the final 2026 collection (October 17), the City of Warrensburg solid waste page and FAQs, the city's 2023 Solid Waste Management Plan (section 3.5.5 and survey questions 24-25), Constable Sanitation's Warrensburg large-item page, Missouri DNR's paint guidance and facility map data, KC Water's 2026 participating communities, and PaintCare's locator data. The West Central Missouri Solid Waste Management District's HHW page (moswmd-f.com) lists the October 17 date and says dried latex can go in the trash, but it only loads over plain http (its https certificate fails), so it is not cited as a source; it doesn't name oil-based paint either. Unresolved: no county or district page names oil-based paint, and PaintCare's locator listing (Missouri has no PaintCare program) only repeats the latex exclusion, so the guide tells readers to call first; no quantity limit is posted; DNR's map says the site serves Johnson and Lafayette counties while the county says Johnson County residents; 2027 dates aren't posted.
