THE LOCAL ANSWERCall 660-827-7820 to book a drop-off time, then take oil-based paint, stain and varnish to the green trailer at Sedalia's Materials Management Site, 27882 Highway U. The trailer doesn't take latex paint. Dry latex with kitty litter or a hardener and put it in your trash.
In Sedalia, Missouri (Pettis County), the city takes oil-based paint, stain and varnish at a hazardous waste trailer on its Materials Management Site, 27882 Highway U. You must book a time first by calling 660-827-7820. Latex paint isn't on the city's list, and PaintCare's listing says the trailer doesn't take it, so dry latex out and put it in the trash. The trailer is for households only.
Book first, then look for the green trailer
Drop-offs are by appointment only, not on city holidays. Call the Sanitation Division at 660-827-7820 on a weekday. At the site, take the third gravel drive on the left. The household hazardous waste trailer is the 53-foot green container; the red one near the entrance is for electronics.
Latex paint stays home and dries out
The city's list names oil-based paint but not latex, and PaintCare's listing says the trailer doesn't take latex. Missouri DNR says water-based paint is not hazardous once it's solid. Mix in kitty litter, sand, shredded newspaper or a paint hardener, let it set with the lid off, then put it in your trash.
Two flyers, three phone numbers
A 2021 city flyer says to call 660-827-3000 ext. 1166 and lists the Sanitation Division's hours as 7 a.m.-4 p.m. The June 2026 flyer says 660-827-7820 and 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. PaintCare's listing gives a third number, 660-620-5527. Use the newer city number. If it doesn't answer, the city's main line is 660-827-3000.
Site hours aren't drop-off hours
Since May 1, 2026, the Materials Management Site is open Monday-Friday 7-5 and Saturday 7-noon for recycling, brush and compost sales. That notice doesn't mention hazardous waste. Paint goes in the trailer only at the time you book.
Different from Columbia and Kansas City
Columbia takes water-based (latex) paint too, but only on the first and third Saturdays from April to October, and only from City of Columbia residents. KC Water's drop-off is for residents of Kansas City and its partner communities. Sedalia's trailer posts no season, but it takes appointments only and the city lists oil-based paint, not latex.
