In Winfield, Kansas (Cowley County), take leftover paint to the Cowley County Landfill and Transfer Station at 23857 81st Rd. It takes household hazardous waste free, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.–noon. The city of Winfield has no paint drop-off of its own and sends people to the county site. Kansas has no paint recycling program, so stores don’t take paint back.
Six days a week, free
Cowley County lists household hazardous waste at no charge. The transfer station is open weekdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.–noon; the county doesn’t give separate hazardous waste hours.
Paint isn’t allowed in the city’s Saturday roll-off
Winfield puts out a free clean-up roll-off on Saturday mornings, 8–11 a.m., April through October. The city says it will be at the City Operations Center, 2701 E. 9th Ave., but also says to call 620-221-5600 for the week’s location. Paint, oil and batteries are on its do-not-bring list. Take paint to the county site instead.
Keep paint out of the C&D pile
Staff inspect every load before you unload. The construction and demolition pit doesn’t take buckets, drums, cans or aerosol cans, empty or full. Tell staff you have paint so it goes to household hazardous waste.
Tarp the truck
If you’re also dumping trash or debris, uncovered loads are charged double. The station takes cash or check only.
Arkansas City uses the same site
Arkansas City’s own pages send residents to this transfer station for household hazardous waste. PaintCare lists it for Cowley County households. The Sedgwick County facility in Wichita is for Sedgwick County residents.
