A licensed hazardous waste contractor hauls away what the facility collects. Usable paint may go on the free lobby shelf or to city departments.
Your state doesn’t have a PaintCare program, so stores here don’t take paint for free. These are the public drop-off programs PaintCare’s map lists, closest first. Most only serve their own residents and some charge a fee. Call before you go.

Call 620-276-1278 and set up an appointment; from October 1 through March 31 the facility doesn't keep regular drop-in hours. Ask whether it takes latex as well as oil-based paint, since the city's page only names oil-based and lead-based paint.
You can still use the Garden City facility, but you'll pay $3 a gallon for paint and $5 a gallon for aerosols. If you live in Seward County, its landfill site in Liberal is free to the county's residential customers, up to five gallons or 25 pounds per trip.
The city's cleanup days won't take waste a contractor creates, and contractors handle their own removal. The hazardous waste page only talks about residential customers and paying non-residents, so call 620-276-1278 before bringing job-site paint.
Stop by during open hours and check the facility lobby. The city sets out some paints, automotive care products and household cleaners it receives there, free for public use.

This guide is for Garden City, Kansas, in Finney County. The city runs a household hazardous waste facility at 206 Isabel Avenue that takes paint free from Finney County residential customers. From October 1 through March 31 it's open by appointment only, so call 620-276-1278 first. Kansas has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don't take leftover paint back. Liquid paint isn't allowed in city trash containers.
The city lists Thursday hours, noon to 7 p.m., only from April 1 through September 30. From October 1 through March 31 the facility is open by appointment only. The page lists the first Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to noon, on a separate line and doesn't say whether those Saturdays continue in winter. Ask when you call 620-276-1278.
The city says some products it receives, including paints, automotive care products and household cleaners, are set out in the facility's lobby. Anyone can browse them and take them free during open hours. City departments also use some of the paint that comes in. If you only need a little paint, look there before you buy.
The facility is free for Finney County residential customers. Everyone else pays the city's posted fees: $3 a gallon for paint, $5 a gallon for aerosols and $7 a gallon for flammables. The page doesn't say what proof of residence it wants, so ask when you book.
Garden City's Solid Waste rules ban household hazardous waste liquids, including paints, from city trash containers. The Spring and Fall Clean-Up bans liquid paints too, and its rules say to call 620-276-1278 and bring them to the hazardous waste facility instead. The 2026 Fall Cleanup ran September 28 through October 9 and is over.
Ford County's site in Dodge City lists latex and oil-based paint and takes them free on weekdays. Garden City's page names oil-based and lead-based paint as hazardous products and lists a per-gallon paint fee, but it never says whether latex is taken. Ask about latex when you call.
Kansas has no PaintCare program, and PaintCare's locator has no Finney County listing. If your paint is still good, check the facility's free lobby shelf or give it to someone who can use it. Finney County's Landfill page says the Weldon Landfill, three miles east of Garden City, is now owned and run by Waste Connections, Inc. We found no landfill page that covers paint, so call before taking any there. Seward County's site in Liberal is free for its own residential customers; its page doesn't say whether people from other counties can use it.

October 17, 2026: read Garden City's Household Hazardous Waste page and FAQs, Solid Waste, Recycling and Spring / Fall Clean-Up pages, the Cleanup Rules PDF and the 2026 Fall Cleanup map (September 28-October 9, 2026, now past); Finney County's Landfill page; Ford County's and Seward County's hazardous waste pages for comparison; and PaintCare's locator data (no Finney County record; Kansas has no PaintCare program). KDHE's household hazardous waste pages returned HTTP 403 and couldn't be read. Unresolved: whether latex paint is taken; whether first-Saturday hours run October-March; what proof of residence is needed; whether businesses can use the site; any quantity limit; whether the Weldon Landfill takes dried paint (no page found).
