Start with these

East Central Recycling (Muncie Sanitary District household hazardous waste drop-off)

701 E Centennial Ave, Muncie, IN 47303

Accepts
The district’s page has no list of accepted items. Its glossary of hazardous products names paint, paint thinner, paint remover, stains and varnishes. Oil-based paint has been taken: the district’s 2020 guide lists it, and the site collected 1,432 pounds of it in 2020. Latex is unclear: the district’s guide from December 2020 says “no latex,” but the site sent 56,948 pounds of latex to a paint recycler that same year. PaintCare’s listing says only “certain paints” and to call. The site also takes blue recycling bags, tires, electronics, batteries and light bulbs.
Who can use it
Delaware County residents, for waste that came from their home. Not for commercial, industrial or farm businesses.
Hours
Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.–noon. It closes to the public a half hour before those times, so arrive by 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Closed Sunday.
Load limits
No gallon limit is published. Keep paint in the original container with the label on. PaintCare’s listing says empty, dried-out or leaking cans aren’t taken.
Fees
Free for Delaware County households. Construction materials cost extra (call for the charge).

Call 765-282-1900 before you load latex. The Muncie Sanitary District sponsors the free drop-off; East Central Recycling runs the site. The Muncie Sanitary District office (300 N. High St.) is a different address; paint goes to Centennial Avenue.

Muncie Habitat for Humanity ReStore

4640 W Bethel Ave, Muncie, IN 47304

Accepts
“Paint/Stains/Wall Coverings” is on the ReStore’s list of donations it takes, along with other new or nearly new building supplies. The district’s 2020 guide lists the ReStore for full, usable gallons in neutral colors.
Who can use it
Individuals, contractors and businesses can donate.
Hours
Shopping and donation drop-off Tuesday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Load limits
The ReStore’s page gives no paint conditions. The district’s 2020 guide says full, usable gallons in neutral colors. Call before you bring partly used cans.
Fees
Free to donate.

This is for good paint someone can use, not for disposal. Call 765-288-1814 before bringing paint. The ReStore also schedules donation pickups through an online form.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to East Central Recycling, 701 E. Centennial Ave., Muncie: free for Delaware County households, weekdays until 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays until 11:30 a.m. Oil-based paint has been taken. Call 765-282-1900 before bringing latex, because the sources disagree on it.

In Muncie, Indiana, household paint goes to East Central Recycling at 701 E. Centennial Ave. The Muncie Sanitary District sponsors it as the free household hazardous waste drop-off for everyone in Delaware County. It’s open six days a week. Oil-based paint has been taken there. For latex, sources disagree, so call 765-282-1900 first. Indiana has no paint recycling program, so stores don’t take paint back.

One site for the whole county

East Central Recycling takes household hazardous waste free from any Delaware County home, not just Muncie Sanitary District customers. That includes Delaware County towns such as Yorktown, Daleville, Eaton and Albany. The page doesn’t say what proof of address staff check.

Get there 30 minutes before closing

Posted hours are 8 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.–noon Saturday. The site stops taking the public a half hour before closing, so the real cutoff is 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Ask about latex before you load it

The district’s page names “paint” only in a glossary of hazardous products, not as a list of what it takes. The district’s 2020 guide says “no latex.” Yet the same site shipped 56,948 pounds of latex to a paint recycler in 2020. Call 765-282-1900 and ask if latex is being taken now.

Empty cans go in the blue bag

The Muncie Sanitary District takes empty, rinsed paint cans with tin and steel recycling. Cans with paint left in them are on the “do not recycle” list.

Good paint can go to the ReStore

The Muncie Habitat ReStore, 4640 W. Bethel Ave., lists paint and stain among the donations it takes. It’s open Tuesday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Free pickup programs and other options

There’s no free store take-back in Indiana. If East Central Recycling won’t take your latex, Indiana’s environment department (IDEM) says paint can go in the regular garbage once it is completely dry. Clay cat litter speeds that up. Never pour paint down a drain. Usable paint can go to the ReStore, a theater group or a neighbor.

Keep paint in its original can with the label on and the lid tight. Check the label: “water cleanup” means latex; “mineral spirits” or “alkyd” means oil-based. Pack cans upright in a box. Have your ID handy in case staff ask where you live. Arrive before 4:30 p.m. on weekdays or 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Sources and how we checked10

October 15, 2026: read the Muncie Sanitary District household hazardous waste page (free for Delaware County residents, home waste only, no commercial, industrial or farm waste, closes a half hour early), its sanitation page (East Central Recycling at 701 E. Centennial Ave., construction materials charged), its what-to-recycle page (empty rinsed paint cans accepted, partly full cans not), its household hazardous waste page lists paint only in a glossary of hazardous products, not as an accepted-items list; its February 2021 board report (56,948 pounds of latex and 1,432 pounds of oil-based paint in 2020), the East Central Indiana Solid Waste District guide (PDF dated December 2020: oil-based paint and “no latex” at East Central Recycling; ReStore for full, usable neutral gallons), Muncie–Delaware Clean & Beautiful’s recycling page, the Muncie ReStore page, IDEM’s household hazardous waste page, and PaintCare’s listing (“certain paints,” call). Unresolved: whether liquid latex is taken today (sources conflict; no phone call was made), what proof of residency is checked, any gallon limit, options for businesses, and the ReStore’s paint conditions. No Muncie-specific rule on dried latex in trash carts was found; IDEM’s statewide guidance is used.

Checked October 15, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
