THE LOCAL ANSWERTake leftover paint to a Marion County ToxDrop Saturday: Traders Point (7550 N Lafayette Rd) on the first Saturday, or Perry Township (4925 S Shelby St) on the second and fourth Saturdays, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Bring up to 20 gallons of liquid per visit in boxes or bins, not trash bags. It’s for Marion County homes only.
In Indianapolis and the rest of Marion County, leftover paint goes to ToxDrop. These are Saturday drop-off days run by the city at two places: Traders Point on the northwest side and the Perry Township Government Center on the south side. You can bring up to 20 gallons of liquid each visit. There is no weekday hazardous waste site in Marion County.
Pick the right Saturday
Traders Point (7550 N Lafayette Rd) is open the first Saturday of the month. Perry Township (4925 S Shelby St) is open the second and fourth Saturdays. Both run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nothing is open on the third or fifth Saturday, or on major holidays.
Twenty gallons per trip
The city caps each visit at 20 gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solids. A big repaint can take two Saturdays. Pack cans in boxes, crates or open bins. Trash bags may be turned away.
Paint is on the city’s ToxDrop list
The city lists paint, wood stain, varnish, paint thinner, paint stripper and aerosol cans. It doesn’t treat latex differently, so you can bring both kinds.
Not in your gray cart
Indianapolis says household hazardous waste can’t go in your trash cart, and the city’s trash pages don’t give a dry-it-out option for latex. The Citizens’ Transfer Station on S Belmont Ave is for extra trash, not chemicals.
Don’t leave cans at a closed gate
The city treats waste left outside a closed ToxDrop site as illegal dumping, with fines up to $2,500. If you miss the day, keep the cans at home for the next one.
