In Castle Rock, Colorado, you have two choices: a PaintCare store in town, or Douglas County's new GreenWorks hazardous waste drop-off in Sedalia. The county announced household hazardous waste drop-off there on August 4, 2026. It's free for Douglas County residents by appointment and takes spray paint and thinner too.

Castle Rock has no town trash or recycling service. Your HOA or your own hauler (the Town names HBS Trash and Waste Management) handles pickup. For chemicals, the Town points residents to Douglas County. The Town also lists a community recycling center at 701 Prairie Hawk Drive (Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon), but not for paint.
PaintCare's Colorado page says that "for a limited time" households in certain counties, including Douglas, with more than ten gallons of paint, stain or varnish can get a free pickup. Call 720-854-8722 to see if you qualify. PaintCare's listing says households only, no businesses.
Contractors and businesses with 100 gallons or more can ask PaintCare for a free large-volume pickup. Businesses can't use GreenWorks. Douglas County's page also names GreenSheen Paint at 1055 S. Jason St. in Denver as a place that takes more than 5 gallons. The Town co-hosted a free paint event with GreenSheen on September 13, 2025, at Douglas County High School. We found no 2026 event.

Keep paint in the original labeled can, lid tight. For GreenWorks: containers of 5 gallons or less, 10 gallons total, nothing mixed, nothing leaking. For stores: 5 gallons per store and no spray cans. Pack cans upright in a sturdy box.
Full preparation checklist →At PaintCare stores like Moore Lumber (1335 Park St) and Sherwin-Williams (175 Plum Creek Pkwy), or by appointment at Douglas County GreenWorks in Sedalia.

Yes. Its list includes latex and oil-based paint, stains, varnishes, aerosols and thinners.
The county's page says containers up to 5 gallons and 10 gallons total per visit. PaintCare's listing shows a higher limit, so plan on the county's 10.
The county now runs year-round drop-off at GreenWorks by appointment and says the old yearly cap is gone.
Checked October 16, 2026: Douglas County's GreenWorks Household Hazardous Waste page (hours, accepted items, 5-gallon container and 10-gallon visit limits, residency, terms, alternate options including GreenSheen), the county's August 4, 2026 news release, the Town of Castle Rock's Other Services page (no town trash service; chemicals to Douglas County), the Town's September 13, 2025 paint event listing (past), PaintCare's Colorado page (door-to-door counties include Douglas), PaintCare's locator data (four Castle Rock stores, GreenWorks record 18138, door-to-door record 11446) and Colorado CDPHE's program list (still describes Douglas County spring and fall events). Conflicts: PaintCare lists a 100-gallon limit and phone 303-663-6274 for GreenWorks, while the county page says 10 gallons per visit and gives 303-660-7480; the county page says reservations open both 'ten days' and 'a week' ahead. PaintCare's listing for Moore Lumber on Park Street shows no per-visit limit. Not settled: how long PaintCare's door-to-door offer lasts; whether the Town plans another paint event.
