Drop 5 gallons at Sherwin-Williams downtown and the rest at Knecht Home Center on East Main. Call each store first to make sure it can take them that day.
The stores won't take these. Call Twin Enviro at 719-372-6671 and ask whether it will accept them and what it costs. Don't put them in your trash cart.
There's no PaintCare store in town. Bring up to 5 gallons to each Cañon City store; Knecht Home Center on East Main is on the Florence side of town.
Ask PaintCare for a free large-volume pickup, which starts at 100 gallons. Stores take only 5 gallons a visit.
Take liquid paint, stain and varnish to Sherwin-Williams at 1015 Main St or Knecht Home Center at 3090 E Main St, up to 5 gallons per store per visit, free. For spray paint or thinner, call Twin Enviro at 719-372-6671 and ask; the city only says Twin Enviro may take paint, antifreeze and electronics by arrangement.
In Cañon City, Colorado, take leftover house paint, stain and varnish to one of two PaintCare stores: Sherwin-Williams on Main Street downtown or Knecht Home Center on East Main. Fremont County has no household hazardous waste program on Colorado's state list. The city says Twin Enviro, which runs the Phantom Landfill near Penrose, may take paint if you call first. Nobody local publishes a place for spray paint or thinner.
PaintCare's data lists Sherwin-Williams at 1015 Main St and Knecht Home Center at 3090 E Main St. Each takes 5 gallons per visit of latex or oil-based paint, stain and varnish in labeled cans. Visit both and you can drop 10 gallons in one trip. Call each store first.
Colorado's state list has no entry for Fremont County. The county's 2026 spring clean-up (trash vouchers, March 16 to April 30) said no hazardous waste would be taken at any site. The old regional recycling bins run by the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments ended October 7, 2020.
The city's waste page says: "Twin Enviro may recycle paint, antifreeze, and electronics if contacted first to arrange dropoff." It doesn't mention spray cans or thinner, so ask about those. The Phantom Landfill is at 2500 Fremont County Road 67, Penrose, north of the airport. The county lists its hours as Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Cañon City has two private trash companies, Republic Services (645 McDaniel Blvd, 719-275-6955) and Twin Enviro. The city says paint, oil or any liquid must stay out of recycling totes because it can send the whole load to the landfill. It also says not to put liquids in garbage cans or dumpsters.
PaintCare's data shows no store in Florence or Penrose, so the two Cañon City stores are the closest. Valley Ace Hardware in Westcliffe is the nearest store in Custer County. Beyond that, the next PaintCare stores are in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, more than 30 miles away.
With 100 gallons or more, a contractor or property manager can ask PaintCare for a free large-volume pickup. PaintCare's home pickup for more than 10 gallons covers Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, El Paso and Teller counties, not Fremont County. El Paso County's hazardous waste site (El Paso and Teller residents) and Pueblo's collection day are only for their own residents. Colorado's state list shows Clean Harbors, 9775 E. 97th Place, Henderson (Denver area), as open to all Colorado residents; check ahead for what it takes.

Keep paint in the original labeled can with the lid on tight, and bring no more than 5 gallons to each store. Keep spray cans and thinner in a separate box; stores won't take them. Never pour paint into a trash can, recycling tote or storm drain.
Full preparation checklist →At Sherwin-Williams, 1015 Main St, or Knecht Home Center, 3090 E Main St. Both are PaintCare drop-offs and take up to 5 gallons per visit free.
We found none. Colorado's state list has no Fremont County program, and the county's spring 2026 clean-up said no hazardous waste would be accepted.
PaintCare stores don't take it, and we found no local program that does. The city says Twin Enviro may take paint, antifreeze and electronics by arrangement, but it doesn't mention spray cans, so call 719-372-6671 and ask. Colorado's list shows Clean Harbors in Henderson as open to all state residents.
PaintCare's data lists none in Florence or Penrose. The Cañon City stores are the closest.
Not right now. PaintCare's Colorado page lists the pickup (for more than 10 gallons) in six Denver-area counties plus El Paso and Teller, not Fremont.
Checked October 16, 2026: the City of Cañon City Waste / Recyclables page (Twin Enviro may recycle paint by arrangement; Republic Services and Twin Enviro contacts; UAACOG recycling ended October 7, 2020), Fremont County's 2026 Clean-Up Campaign press release (PDF, read as text: Phantom Landfill address, phone and hours; no hazardous waste at any site), Colorado CDPHE's HHW program list (no Fremont County entry; Clean Harbors Henderson open to all Colorado residents; El Paso site for El Paso and Teller residents), PaintCare's Colorado page and locator data. Store details are from PaintCare's data, not visits or calls. The county's own website pages returned access errors. Not settled: whether Twin Enviro takes paint, spray cans or thinner today, at what price, and from whom; any 2027 county clean-up or chemical day.
