From PaintCare’s drop-off map ↗, updated October 6, 2026. Hours and limits are PaintCare’s. Distances are straight-line, not driving.
Load paint, thinner, cleaners and spray cans into the trunk and drive to 1145 E. Taylor St. between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Bring an ID with your Vista address. No appointment needed.
Take them to a Vista PaintCare store such as Vista Paint on Sycamore Avenue or Dunn-Edwards on Hacienda Drive. Call first to check they have room.
Taylor Street is closed Saturday, November 28, and RSWA lists the same closure for its Poway site. Take house paint to a Vista PaintCare store that week and save thinner and spray cans for the next Saturday it's open.
If they're 65 or older or have a disability placard, book free door-to-door pickup at 800-714-1195.
Bring paint, thinner and spray cans to 1145 E. Taylor St. on a Saturday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., with an ID or utility bill showing you live in Vista; it's free and no appointment is needed. It's closed holiday weekends, including November 28 and December 26, 2026. House paint alone can go any day to a PaintCare store such as Vista Paint on Sycamore Avenue, up to 20 gallons.
In Vista, in North County San Diego, California, leftover paint and chemicals go to the regional hazardous waste facility at 1145 E. Taylor Street, across from the city's Public Works yard. It's open Saturdays only, free for residents, with no appointment. Vista also has four paint stores that take house paint free through PaintCare. This is a different system from the City of San Diego's Miramar facility.
The city lists residents of Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, San Marcos and Solana Beach. The Regional Solid Waste Association adds Del Mar, National City and Poway. Oceanside isn't on either list, so check which city your address is actually in before you go. Bring an ID or a current utility bill.
The city's 2026 closure list still has Thanksgiving weekend (November 28) and Christmas weekend (December 26) ahead. It also lists a January 2 New Year's closure but doesn't give the year. RSWA posts the same closure dates for its Poway facility, so on those Saturdays use a PaintCare store for house paint and hold chemicals for the next open Saturday.
If you're 65 or older or have a registered disability placard, the door-to-door program is free. The city says to call 800-714-1195; RSWA lists 858-481-7233. RSWA says others in member cities can use it for a $10 copay.
PaintCare lists four Vista stores at 20 gallons a visit: Dunn-Edwards (1970 Hacienda Dr.) and Sherwin-Williams (2070 Hacienda Dr.), Sherwin-Williams at 1919 W. Vista Way, and Vista Paint at 611 Sycamore Ave. They take house paint, stain and varnish, not thinner or spray cans.
PaintCare lists ACTEnviro Transfer Station at 2010 W. Mission Rd. in Escondido for up to 200 gallons of house paint a visit, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it takes empty cans. Escondido's own Washington Avenue facility is by appointment only. Its operator says it's for Escondido residents only, but RSWA and PaintCare say residents of RSWA member cities, including Vista, can use it. Call 760-745-3203 before counting on it.
EDCO, Vista's trash hauler, says paint can't go in curbside carts or bins. Unincorporated county residents near Vista should check San Diego County's household hazardous waste page for their options. With 100 gallons or more of house paint, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Keep paint and chemicals in their original, labeled containers, nothing over 5 gallons. Don't mix products. Carry them in the trunk, away from passengers and pets. Stay under 15 gallons or 125 pounds a trip, and bring proof you live in a city that can use the site.
Full preparation checklist →No. It's first come, first served on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring an ID or a current utility bill.
Oceanside isn't on the city's or RSWA's list of cities that can use it. Oceanside residents can still take house paint to a PaintCare store in Vista or Oceanside.
No. The city's 2026 list closes it Saturday, November 28, and Saturday, December 26.
Yes, to the Taylor Street facility. RSWA's list includes aerosol cans that aren't empty; the city's own list doesn't mention them. PaintCare stores don't take spray cans.
The Vista PaintCare stores take house paint from businesses, up to 20 gallons a visit. PaintCare says the Taylor Street facility takes small businesses by appointment; call 800-714-1195. ACTEnviro in Escondido takes up to 200 gallons on weekdays.
October 16, 2026: read the City of Vista's facility page (in a browser; it blocks automated fetches), EDCO's Vista hazardous waste page, the Regional Solid Waste Association home and disposal-options pages, San Marcos's household hazardous waste page, Escondido Disposal's appointment page and San Diego County's page; checked PaintCare's locator data for Vista, Escondido, Oceanside and Carlsbad. Conflicts: the city lists six cities, RSWA nine (adds Del Mar, National City, Poway); door-to-door numbers differ (city 800-714-1195, RSWA 858-481-7233); RSWA says its members can use the Escondido facility, Escondido's operator says Escondido residents only, so we leave Escondido out. Neither the city nor RSWA states a facility gallon limit beyond the 15-gallon, 125-pound transport rule. Business use is documented only by PaintCare. ACTEnviro's paint drop-off is documented only by PaintCare. Store hours weren't checked. Peer review (Oct. 16): re-read the city page in the browser. Its "2026 Closures" list ends with "Jan 2nd New Year" and gives no year, so the guide no longer adds one. RSWA's HHW overview posts the same seven closure dates. The aerosol rule comes from RSWA's list, not the city's. San Marcos's page gives 800-714-1195 for both facilities and home pickup.
