If it's only house paint, take it to Alpine Paint on Laurel Mountain Road or High Country Lumber on Sierra Manor Road. If your HOA or rental doesn't have a Mammoth Disposal account, the stores are the simplest free option.
Bring it to the Mammoth Disposal scale house on a Friday or Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Label every container and keep each one 5 gallons or smaller.
Pumice Valley, off Highway 120 East, is the county site and takes household hazardous waste free from Mono County households Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep paint to 5 gallons to avoid the over-limit charge.
Take house paint to a PaintCare store in town. Ask Mammoth Disposal about its business drop-off; PaintCare says businesses in town pay no fee there. County sites refuse business hazardous waste.
Bring paint to the Mammoth Disposal scale house at 59 Commerce Drive on a Friday or Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it's free if you have a Town of Mammoth Lakes residential account. Cans must be labeled and no bigger than 5 gallons. For house paint on any day, High Country Lumber on Sierra Manor Road and Alpine Paint on Laurel Mountain Road are PaintCare drop-offs.
In Mammoth Lakes, in Mono County, leftover paint goes to the Mammoth Disposal transfer station at 59 Commerce Drive in the industrial park. It takes hazardous waste only on Fridays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it's free for Town of Mammoth Lakes residential account holders. Mono County's Pumice Valley site, off Highway 120 East, is the free county option for other Mono County households.
The transfer station is open every day, but Mammoth Disposal takes hazardous waste only on Fridays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PaintCare's listing shows the full transfer station hours, so go by Mammoth Disposal's own schedule. Check in with the gate attendant and say what you're bringing.
Mammoth Disposal's hazardous waste page says it's free for Town of Mammoth Lakes residential account holders and others may pay. Its transfer station page says hazardous waste is free for all customers. The same page says owners of 1- or 2-unit homes in town must have a self-haul account. If you're a renter or second-home owner without an account, ask at the gate.
Benton Crossing Landfill closed to the public on Dec. 31, 2022, and the county now sends those customers to Pumice Valley. It's about 5 miles east of U.S. 395 on Highway 120 East and open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It takes household hazardous waste free from Mono County households, up to 220 pounds a month.
The county's 2025 fee sheet charges $2 a gallon for paint over 5 gallons and $6 for each spray can over 5. An older 2022 sheet, still linked, allowed 10 gallons of paint free. Bring 5 gallons or less if you want to be sure there's no charge.
The county says landfill and transfer station hours can change in winter storms and road closures. Pumice Valley closes early in high winds; the county posts closures on its page. Call 760-937-2192 (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) or 760-920-7258 (Wednesday, Saturday) before driving out.
For house paint, stain and varnish only, PaintCare lists High Country Lumber at 243 Sierra Manor Road (20 gallons a visit) and Alpine Paint at 89 Laurel Mountain Road (10 gallons). Both take paint from households and businesses. They don't take spray cans or unlabeled cans. Mono County's other transfer stations (Benton, Chalfant, Walker, Bridgeport and Paradise) also take household hazardous waste on their own days. With 100 gallons or more, ask PaintCare about a free pickup.

Keep paint in its original, labeled can, lid on tight, nothing over 5 gallons. Mammoth Disposal won't take unlabeled containers. Have your Mammoth Disposal account information ready at the gate.
Full preparation checklist →Not at Mammoth Disposal; it takes hazardous waste only Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PaintCare stores in town take house paint during their business hours. Call ahead.

Mammoth Disposal's list doesn't name spray cans, so call 760-934-2201 first. Mono County sites take them; over 5 cans, the 2025 fee sheet charges $6 each. PaintCare stores don't take spray cans.
High Country Lumber and Alpine Paint take house paint from businesses. PaintCare lists Mammoth Disposal for very small businesses, with no fee for businesses in town. Mono County's own sites take household waste only.
None were posted when we checked. The regular options are Mammoth Disposal on Fridays and Saturdays and Pumice Valley Monday to Saturday.
October 16, 2026: read Mammoth Disposal's transfer station and household hazardous waste pages, Mono County's Solid Waste, landfills and transfer stations, and Pumice Valley pages (in a browser), the county's 2025 gate and HHW fee sheet, its 2022 HHW limit sheet and its hours sheet (downloaded), and PaintCare's locator data for Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining and Bridgeport. Conflicts: PaintCare lists Mammoth Disposal with full transfer station hours, but Mammoth Disposal says hazardous waste is Friday and Saturday only. Mammoth Disposal's two pages disagree on whether hazardous waste is free for everyone or only town account holders. The county's free paint limit is 5 gallons in 2025 and 10 gallons in the older 2022 sheet and on PaintCare. Pumice Valley has no street address on the county page; we used PaintCare's 200 Dross Rd. No Mono County events were posted. The 2025 fee sheet gives no free amount for non-PaintCare products such as thinner (the 2022 sheet allowed 2 gallons). The transfer station page's gate-fee line covers general disposal, not hazardous waste specifically. Store hours weren't checked.
