THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint in its original, labeled can to the Household Hazardous Waste facility at the Fort Smith Landfill, 5900 Commerce Rd., Monday–Friday 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m. or Saturday 7:30–11:30 a.m. It’s free for Sebastian County residents, with a 5-gallon daily paint limit. Latex can also be dried out and put in your city trash cart.
Fort Smith, Arkansas, has a free year-round drop-off for paint. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at the Fort Smith Landfill, 5900 Commerce Road, takes oil-based and latex paint, stain, varnish and aerosol cans from Sebastian County residents. The City of Fort Smith runs it with the Sebastian County Regional Solid Waste District. Usable paint may go to a free reuse building at the same site.
Labels on, or it gets turned away
The city won’t take any product without its original label, or anything it can’t identify. Leave paint in the can it came in. Don’t pour leftovers together.
5 gallons of paint a day
The district’s paint list sets a 5-gallon daily limit. If you’re clearing out a garage, split the paint over several days. The facility is open six days a week.
Two ways to handle latex
The city’s household hazardous waste page lists water/latex-based paint as accepted. Its Solid Waste FAQ also says latex paint and cans can be dried and put in a normal household trash container. Either works. Dry it all the way: the landfill won’t take free liquids.
Free paint in the reuse building
Usable paint, thinner, stripper and garden chemicals can go into a small reuse building at the site; the landfill page says staff decide whether paint goes there or gets solidified. The city says any Fort Smith resident can stop by and take what they can use, at no charge.
Not at Citywide Cleanup or Dial-A-Truck
Citywide Cleanup dumpsters don’t take paint, liquids, cleaning chemicals or engine oil. The Dial-A-Truck page lists bulky items such as appliances, couches, tables, chairs and mattresses, and doesn’t list paint. Take paint to the hazardous waste facility instead.
