THE LOCAL ANSWERDry your leftover paint completely, latex or oil-based, with kitty litter or a hardener, take the lid off, and put the can in your Prescott trash cart. Wet paint waits for the city's annual curbside household hazardous waste pickup; the 2026 round ran in March, and the city says to check back in fall 2026 for the next one. Don't take paint to the Transfer Station; it isn't accepted there.
Prescott, Arizona, has no paint drop-off. The city lets you put both latex and oil-based paint in the trash once it's completely dry with the lid off, and it collects wet paint at your curb once a year for registered trash customers. The Transfer Station on Sundog Ranch Road doesn't take paint. Arizona has no PaintCare program, so there is no PaintCare store drop-off network here.
Prescott lets dried oil-based paint go in the trash too
Prescott's rule covers both paint types. Its What Goes Where page says latex and oil-based paint "can go in the trash ONLY when dried completely out and lid must be off the cans." It gives kitty litter or an additive from a hardware store as examples, and says paint in its wet form is hazardous.
Curbside pickup has gallon caps
The 2026 curbside pickup (March 2 to 27) took up to 5 gallons of oil-based paint, stain and thinner and up to 20 gallons of latex. Everything went in a box marked 'HHW', 6 to 10 feet from the curb. Registration was required, and commercial accounts and dumpster communities couldn't take part.
The Transfer Station says no to paint
The Transfer Station at 2800 Sundog Ranch Rd. lists paint, propane tanks, car batteries and household hazardous waste as not accepted. It does take up to 5 gallons a month of used motor oil and antifreeze from Prescott residents, free. If you're hauling dried paint cans with other trash, ask at the booth or call 928-777-1116.
Unincorporated Yavapai County has a separate event
The City of Sedona holds a free drive-through collection for Sedona and unincorporated Yavapai County residents; Williamson, Kirkland and Skull Valley are among the areas named. It's set for Saturday, October 24, 2026, 7:30 a.m. to noon, at Sedona Red Rock High School. It takes oil-based and spray paint but no latex or acrylic. The City of Prescott isn't among the areas it names.
Prescott Valley runs its own program
The Town of Prescott Valley has a separate curbside program (20-gallon limit on oil and latex paint). Its page says pickup requests for 2026 are closed. It's run by Prescott Valley Neighborhood Services (928-759-6010), not the City of Prescott.
