THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to the Hazardous Products Center, 6770 E. Landfill Rd., on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bring your Arizona ID, and a current City of Flagstaff water bill if you live in the city. The limit is 20 gallons a day and 200 pounds a month, no container over 5 gallons. It's closed Monday, October 12, 2026.

Flagstaff and Coconino County residents can drop off paint for free at the Hazardous Products Center next to the Cinder Lake Landfill. Good latex is remixed and given back out. It's only open three weekdays.

Only three days a week

Residents can drop off Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's closed weekends and city holidays. It's closed Monday, October 12, 2026 and reopens Wednesday, October 14.

City residents need a water bill

Everyone needs an Arizona license or state ID with a current address. City residents also need a current Flagstaff water bill. No bill? Bring two pieces of mail with your city address. The landfill scale house has different rules, so don't go by those.

Don't let latex freeze

Good latex and acrylic paint is remixed into exterior paint in brown, gray, tan and white. Paint that's spoiled or has been frozen can't be reused. In winter, keep cans inside a heated space.

Free paint, if you're fast

The Drop & Swap gives remixed paint in 5-gallon buckets, up to 4 buckets per vehicle per day, for exterior use. It runs out between batches, about every two to four weeks. Call 928-213-2159 to check stock.

Lead paint debris goes to the landfill

Chips, dust and debris from old lead-based paint go to Cinder Lake Landfill, not the HPC. Contaminated soil needs approval first.

Free pickup programs and other options

Clean latex and acrylic cans can be recycled. Arizona has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don't take paint back. Business drop-off is paused except electronics. Contractors need a hazardous waste company for now.

Sources and how we checked6

Checked October 7, 2026: Flagstaff's HPC page (hours, residency proof, 20-gallon and 200-pound limits, October 12 closure, business pause), the Drop & Swap page (re-blended paint rules) and the Where to Take Waste chart (paint list, lead paint debris, can recycling), plus ADEQ and PaintCare's state list. PaintCare's locator still says 40 gallons a day; we used the city's 20. Not settled: current re-blended paint stock and how fast appointments for large loads are offered.

Checked October 7, 2026 against these sources, not by phone. How we research.
