THE LOCAL ANSWERBook the city's free household hazardous waste pickup with your City Services Bill account number, then set your paint out in a box marked "HHW" by 7 a.m. on pickup day. It takes up to 10 gallons of latex, oil-based paint, stain and thinner, once per account per calendar year. The 27th Avenue and North Gateway transfer stations don't take household hazardous waste.
Phoenix has no drop-off site for paint. If you have a City of Phoenix trash account, the city will pick up up to 10 gallons of paint at your home once a year for free. Book it first.
The transfer stations are not a paint drop-off
The 27th Avenue and North Gateway transfer stations take trash loads. Their rules list regulated hazardous waste as not accepted and send you to the city's household hazardous waste program. Buckets of 5 gallons or more must be open and empty, or have less than an inch of dried non-hazardous residue.
You get one pickup a year
The limit is one pickup per trash account each calendar year. Gather paint, thinner, cleaners and car fluids, and book once. Paint, stain and thinner share a 10-gallon cap. Chemicals, including spray cans, have their own 5-gallon cap.
Apartments and HOAs with private trash
Only homes with a City of Phoenix residential trash account can book. If your building uses a private hauler, you can't book this pickup. Ask your landlord or HOA, or see the county's options below.
No business paint
The city's list refuses business or commercial waste. A painter or property manager clearing a job site needs a licensed hazardous waste company.
Keep cans out of a hot garage
Arizona's environment agency says paint and thinner can burn, and that summer heat can push fumes out of cans. Keep lids tight and store them somewhere cool and dry, away from sun and heat, until pickup day.
