Wood County Solid Waste Authority (paint collection events)

405 19th Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101

Accepts
Paint of all kinds at collection events (2026 report). The 2024 Waverly cleanup notice listed paint, aerosol, liquid, gallon cans and five-gallon buckets. Events have also taken tires, scrap metal, appliances without refrigerant, books, textiles and unopened medical supplies. In 2024 the director said pesticides and household chemicals are considered hazmat, "so we don't want to handle them"; she said a Department of Agriculture contractor would collect pesticides at cleanup events.
Who can use it
Wood County residents (2026 event). Tire drop-off at the 2026 event needed a West Virginia ID.
Hours
Paint is taken only at the authority's collection events; office hours aren't published. In 2026, a Saturday community collection at the Erickson All-Sports Facility in Parkersburg took all forms of paint, the News and Sentinel reported on June 1, 2026. The 2025 schedule listed paint at Williamstown (April 12, 2025), the Erickson All-Sports Facility (May 17, 2025), Mountwood Park on U.S. 50 (June 14, 2025), the Belleville Community Building on Robinhood Road (September 27, 2025) and the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department (October 25, 2025). All of those are past, and no later 2026 paint date is posted on the authority's site.
Load limits
No paint limit has been published. At the 2026 event, tires were limited to 10 off the rim from residents with a West Virginia ID.
Fees
Free. The director called the 2026 collection free for Wood County residents.

Call 304-424-1873 or email directorwcswa@outlook.com for the next collection date. The 2026 report says Waste Management solidified the collected paint before disposal. Between events, the authority says to dry paint for curbside trash (see the guide for WM's conflicting cart rule).

Northwestern Landfill (Wood County Landfill / Northwestern Disposal)

510 E. Dry Run Road, Parkersburg, WV 26104

Accepts
Any items other than paint or hazardous waste, according to the Wood County Solid Waste Authority.
Who can use it
The free first-Saturday day is for West Virginia residents only. Paid disposal eligibility isn't otherwise described.
Hours
Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–4 p.m.; Saturday 6 a.m.–noon; closed Sunday.
Load limits
Paint is not accepted. On free days the limit is 516 lbs.
Fees
$44 a ton. The first Saturday of every month is free for West Virginia residents for up to 516 lbs; there is a fee for appliances with freon and for tires.

Don't bring paint here. Use it for leftover non-paint project debris, and save liquid paint for a Wood County Solid Waste Authority collection.

You live in Vienna or Williamstown

The county collections are open to Wood County residents, and the 2025 schedule included a paint collection at the Williamstown Welcome Center. To set up curbside recycling in Vienna, the authority lists (304) 489-9211, the same number its hauler list gives for Haul-Away Trash. Ask your hauler before setting out dried cans.

Parkersburg rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Save liquid paint for a free Wood County Solid Waste Authority collection; call 304-424-1873 for the next date. The authority says paint dried in the sun, with kitty litter or on newspaper can go out with your weekly trash, lid off. WM's 2026 Parkersburg guide says to keep paint out of your trash cart, so call WM at 800-593-9529 before you set out dried cans.

This guide is for Parkersburg, West Virginia, in Wood County. West Virginia has no PaintCare program. The Wood County Solid Waste Authority takes liquid paint free at its community collection events and says dried paint cans can go out with curbside trash. But the city's trash hauler, WM, tells Parkersburg customers to keep paint out of the cart, so check with WM before setting out dried cans. The Northwestern Landfill on Dry Run Road does not take paint.

Wood County says dried paint can go to the curb

The Wood County Solid Waste Authority lists three ways to handle paint between events: leave the open can in the hot sun to dry, fill it with kitty litter to absorb the paint, or brush the paint onto newspaper. Dried cans go curbside with your weekly trash with the lid off, and dried newspaper goes in your trash.

WM's Parkersburg guide says no paint in the cart

WM collects Parkersburg's household trash under contract with the city and began delivering 96-gallon carts the week of June 15, 2026. The city's FAQ calls it a temporary month-to-month contract. Its 2026 service guide says to keep paint, flammable materials and some other items out of the trash cart, and its bulk pickup won't take hazardous waste. The guide doesn't address dried paint, so call WM at 800-593-9529 before relying on the authority's curbside advice.

Liquid paint goes to a county collection

The authority's 2026 community collection at the Erickson All-Sports Facility took all forms of paint free from Wood County residents, the News and Sentinel reported on June 1, 2026. Waste Management solidified it before disposal. The authority's 2025 schedule listed paint at Williamstown, the Erickson facility, Mountwood Park, Belleville and Waverly. No later 2026 date is posted, so call 304-424-1873.

The landfill on Dry Run Road won't take paint

The authority says the Northwestern Landfill, 510 E. Dry Run Road, accepts anything other than paint or hazardous waste, at $44 a ton. The first Saturday of each month is free for West Virginia residents for up to 516 lbs. It's useful for project debris, but not for your paint.

Habitat's ReStore sells recycled paint but won't take yours

Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Ohio Valley's ReStore, on 16th Street in Vienna, lists "Used Paint" and household liquids or chemicals among the donations it won't accept. It does sell Recolor recycled paint. Call 304-422-4828 with donation questions.

Free pickup programs and other options

For oil-based paint, WVDEP says to donate it to groups such as community service organizations or a local theater group, never pour it down a drain, follow the label, and check with your local solid waste authority. For latex, it says to harden it with sawdust or cat litter, or use it up on a piece of cardboard, before it goes in the trash. PaintCare's locator data has no listing in Wood County. The authority's list of licensed haulers in Wood County gives (304) 424-8597 for inside Parkersburg city limits, then names Haul-Away Trash (304-489-9211), Taylor's Disposal (304-485-3283), Taylor's Trash Removal (304-422-3803), Waste Management (800-593-9529) and Wood County Waste (304-428-8700); ask your hauler about dried paint. West Virginia law requires every household to subscribe to trash service or have proof of monthly landfill disposal, and open dumping carries criminal penalties of $2,500 to $25,000 per day, the authority says.

The authority's 2024 Waverly notice said volunteers would help people unload their vehicles. At home, dry paint outside in the hot sun, fill the can with kitty litter, or brush it onto newspaper; the authority says to leave the lid off dried cans set at the curb. Have WM carts at the curb the night before or by 4 a.m., at least 3 feet from obstacles, with trash bagged inside and the lid closed.

Parkersburg questions5
Can I put paint in the trash in Parkersburg, WV?

The Wood County Solid Waste Authority says yes, once it's dried, with the lid off. WM's 2026 Parkersburg guide says to keep paint out of the trash cart and doesn't mention dried paint. Call WM at 800-593-9529 to check.

Where can I drop off liquid paint in Wood County?

At a Wood County Solid Waste Authority collection event. They're free for Wood County residents. No later 2026 date is posted; call 304-424-1873.

Does the Wood County landfill take paint?

No. The authority says the Northwestern Landfill on E. Dry Run Road accepts anything other than paint or hazardous waste.

Can I put paint out for WM's bulk pickup?

Does the Habitat ReStore take leftover paint?

No. The Mid-Ohio Valley ReStore in Vienna lists used paint among items it doesn't accept. It sells Recolor recycled paint.

Sources and how we checked17

Checked October 17, 2026 from the Wood County Solid Waste Authority's site (home quick-reference, recycling, landfill, contact, enforcement and its 2025 event page and flyer), the WV Solid Waste Management Board's SWA contacts, News and Sentinel articles (October 2024, April 2025, June 1, 2026) and WTAP (February 2024), the City of Parkersburg's sanitation page, its WM FAQ and WM's 2026 service guide, WVDEP's paint-drive release, Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Ohio Valley's ReStore page, and data/paintcare/sites.json (no Wood County record; its only West Virginia entry is a non-program listing in Hancock County). No calls or visits. Conflicts: the authority says dried paint goes curbside, while WM's guide says to keep paint out of the cart; the city's FAQ says bulky pickup is the first full week, WM's guide says the third. The authority's events calendar lists only the April 12, 2025 Williamstown event. Unresolved: the next paint collection date; whether WM takes dried paint cans; the authority's office hours. The WVDEP release's year isn't shown, and its drop-off location is in Charleston, so we used only its general advice.
