Paint recycling
in West Virginia.
Paint disposal in Morgantown and Huntington. West Virginia has no free paint recycling program, so most people dry latex paint for the trash and save oil-based paint for a county hazardous waste day, where one exists.
Check your local rules.
West Virginia has no PaintCare program, so paint stores won’t take it back. WVDEP says oil-based paint is household hazardous waste and should never go down a drain. Give usable cans to community or theater groups, or ask your local recycling center or county solid waste authority. For latex, WVDEP says to harden it with sawdust or cat litter, or brush it onto cardboard, then trash it. WVDEP’s REAP page lists cleanups, tire events and recycling grants; it doesn’t list paint collection. Paint drop-off depends on the county. Hancock County’s recycle center takes up to 5 gallons each of latex and oil-based paint from county residents with a photo ID and a paid garbage receipt. Monongalia County’s once-a-year hazardous waste day takes oil-based paint but not latex.
No free state program.
West Virginia doesn’t have a statewide paint program, so it depends on your city or county. Each city guide shows where latex and oil-based paint can go.
