THE LOCAL ANSWERTake paint to the city landfill’s hazardous waste area at 1989 Jake Sears Road, Tuesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It’s free for residents, up to 5 gallons per visit, with proof you live in Virginia Beach. Don’t put paint cans in your black cart; city rules forbid it.
Virginia Beach takes household paint for free at the city landfill on Jake Sears Road, Tuesday through Saturday. You must prove you live in the city, and you can bring 5 gallons of liquid per visit. The city’s trash rules say paint cans don’t go in the black cart.
Don’t put paint cans in the black cart
The city’s trash rules list paint cans and paint among items that can’t go in black trash carts. That’s stricter than many Virginia cities, which let you trash dried latex. In Virginia Beach, the landfill’s hazardous waste area is the city’s own answer.
Five gallons a trip
The landfill takes up to 5 gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solids per visit. A garage full of cans means several trips, Tuesday to Saturday. The landfill is closed every Monday.
Take the family car, not the work van
Only personal cars, minivans and low-sided pickups get in. Ladder racks, work equipment, business signs, cargo vans and panel vans are turned away, even with paint from your own home. Trailers over 10 feet are not allowed.
Landstown is not the paint stop
SPSA’s Landstown Transfer Station on Concert Drive takes Virginia Beach trash, but it no longer takes household hazardous waste. If you need another option, SPSA’s Norfolk site on Woodland Avenue takes paint on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 12–4 p.m.
