Cover and secure every load and follow staff directions. County code says uncovered loads pay three times the normal fee or can be turned away, while the county’s page and fee schedule say double plus $10; either way, tarp it. Call before bringing any paint, because the county page doesn’t say how paint is handled.
Offer it to a neighbor, as Utah DEQ suggests. If no one wants it, call G&H Garbage (435-789-2743) to ask whether a small can can go in your trash.
G&H won’t take large paint cans. Call the Uintah County Landfill at 435-789-6018; special waste is handled case by case and fees are set by the county.
County code bans hazardous waste, including flammable waste, at the landfill. Call TriCounty Health Department (435-247-1177), your local health department, which is where Utah DEQ sends people outside the counties with programs.
County code bans hazardous waste at the landfill and treats special waste case by case. Commercial loads pay by size (for example, $30 for a 10-yard roll-off) under the 2026 schedule. Call the landfill before bringing any paint.
In Vernal, Utah, call the Uintah County Landfill at 435-789-6018 before bringing paint, because the county bans hazardous waste and handles special waste case by case. Don’t put large paint cans in your G&H garbage can. Utah DEQ says to share leftover paint with neighbors and, outside the counties with programs, to call your local health department (TriCounty Health, 435-247-1177).
Vernal, Utah, the Uintah County seat, has one main disposal site: the Uintah County Landfill at 2801 E 500 N. County code bans hazardous waste there, and the county’s page doesn’t say how it handles paint. Vernal City’s garbage hauler, G&H Garbage, says large paint cans don’t go in the trash. Utah has no PaintCare program, and we found no household hazardous waste collection in Uintah County.
County code says only Uintah County residents can use county waste sites, and the landfill page says it can’t take waste from outside the county unless the County Commission arranges it in advance. The 2026 fee schedule also lists a Daggett County rate ($30 a ton). If you live outside Uintah County, ask first.
Uintah County Code 8.24.010(F) bans any hazardous waste at the landfill, defined to include toxic, corrosive and flammable waste. The landfill page says special waste is handled case by case, with fees set by the County Commission and landfill administrator. Neither says how paint is treated, so call 435-789-6018 first.
Vernal City contracts with G&H Garbage for residential pickup. G&H’s FAQ says you can put everything in the trash except batteries, tires, and large paint or oil cans. It doesn’t define “large” or say whether paint must be dry; call G&H at 435-789-2743.
The county commission took up a Spring Clean Up resolution on March 31, 2026. In 2025, local news reported Free Dump Week ran April 26–May 3 at both county landfills and excluded hazardous waste like chemicals and paint. Don’t save paint for a cleanup week.
Under the April 2026 fee schedule, a small pickup or trailer load is $5 and a pickup with a trailer is $10. The county page and fee schedule say un-tarped loads pay double plus $10, but county code says three times the normal fee or the load can be turned away. The county can’t open charge accounts; buy prepaid ticket books at the landfill or the Clerk-Auditor’s office.
Utah has no PaintCare program. PaintCare’s locator data lists no site in Uintah County, only county programs elsewhere in Utah, such as Salt Lake and Washington counties (non-program listings). Utah DEQ’s household hazardous waste page says Salt Lake, Weber and Morgan counties have programs and tells people in other counties to contact their local health department. A 2014 DEQ article lists collection events or sites in Cache, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Summit and Tooele counties. Neither names Uintah County. For Vernal, the local health department is TriCounty Health Department, 133 South 500 East (435-247-1177). Utah DEQ also suggests sharing extra paint with neighbors. The landfill’s used-oil tank takes used motor oil only.

No Uintah County source gives prep steps for paint. Keep leftover paint sealed in its original can and call the landfill (435-789-6018) or G&H Garbage (435-789-2743) before you dry, bag or haul it. Tarp and secure any load going to the landfill.
Full preparation checklist →Call the Uintah County Landfill (435-789-6018) first; the county bans hazardous waste and handles special waste case by case. G&H Garbage won’t pick up large paint cans.
We didn’t find one. Utah DEQ’s page names programs in Salt Lake, Weber and Morgan counties (a 2014 DEQ article lists Cache, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Summit and Tooele) and says to call your local health department elsewhere.
Not large ones. G&H Garbage’s FAQ says everything goes except batteries, tires, and large paint or oil cans. Ask G&H about small cans.
The Vernal site is open to the public Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. The Lapoint site is open Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m.–3 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Utah DEQ lists those programs by county and tells people in other counties to contact their local health department. Check the program’s own rules before you drive, and call TriCounty Health Department (435-247-1177) about options in the Uintah Basin.
October 17, 2026: read the Uintah County Landfill page, the county fee schedule (Ordinance 04-15-2026 O1, a scanned PDF viewed as images), Title 8 of the Uintah County Code on Municode, Vernal City’s Utilities page, G&H Garbage’s site, Utah DEQ’s household hazardous waste page and article, TriCounty Health Department’s contact, environmental quality and events pages, the March 31, 2026 County Commission agenda, a 2025 Basin Now story on Free Dump Week, and PaintCare’s locator data (no Uintah County listing). No calls were made. Unresolved: no county source says whether dried latex, liquid latex or oil-based paint is accepted, refused or charged as special waste. G&H doesn’t define “large” paint cans. The 2026 Spring Clean Up dates and rules weren’t found. County code (three times the fee) and the county page (double plus $10) disagree on the uncovered-load charge. Utah DEQ’s two pages list different counties with programs (Salt Lake, Weber and Morgan on the HHW page; seven counties in a 2014 article); neither includes Uintah. Utah DEQ’s 2015 landfill fact sheet couldn’t be opened (its document server was offline). We found no paint reuse or ReStore in the Uintah Basin.
