THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take paint to the Dry Creek Transfer Station, 518 W 3450 N, Spanish Fork, Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. It’s free for Provo residents when you bring only household hazardous waste. The limit is 5 gallons of any one item per visit, in containers no bigger than 5 gallons. Businesses can’t use it.

Provo, Utah (Utah County), doesn’t collect paint itself. The city sends hazardous items to the South Utah Valley Solid Waste District’s Dry Creek Transfer Station at 518 W 3450 N in Spanish Fork. Dropping off household hazardous waste there is free for Provo and other Utah County residents, up to 5 gallons of any one item per visit.

Five gallons of one item per visit

The district takes no more than 5 gallons of any one item per visit, and its home page says per day. It won’t let you pay to leave more. If you have 12 gallons of the same paint, plan on three trips on three different days.

Free only if it’s just hazardous waste

Household hazardous waste on its own costs nothing. If you add trash, a covered standard haul up to 500 pounds is $12 for Provo, an in-district city. Uncovered loads pay $25 per 8 feet of length.

Cleanup coupons don’t cover paint dumpsters

Provo puts out cleanup dumpsters for six weeks each spring and fall; the 2026 fall dates are September 28 to November 7, at the Compost Yard and rotating parks. Each cleanup comes with a coupon for one free load to the transfer station. The city says hazardous waste belongs at the transfer station, not in its bins, so keep paint out of the dumpsters. Bring a utility bill or driver’s license to the cleanup sites.

Holiday hours

Dry Creek is closed Sundays and most federal holidays. It closes at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, so go earlier that week.

The Lindon station has different rules

North Pointe’s transfer station in Lindon (2000 W 200 S) lists up to 10 gallons of paint free from households, then 50 cents a gallon. But its FAQ says it takes hazardous waste only ‘on a limited basis’, Provo isn’t one of its member cities, and you need ID to get in. Call 801-225-8538 before you go.

Free pickup programs and other options

Utah has no PaintCare program, so there are no PaintCare drop-off sites at paint stores. The Utah County Health Department points residents to the two county waste stations, Dry Creek and North Pointe, and lists no separate events. Utah DEQ suggests giving usable paint to neighbors.

Keep paint in its original cans with tight lids, upright in a box. Don’t mix leftover paints or chemicals together. Count gallons of each product before you leave so you stay at 5 or under. Tarp the load if you’re also bringing trash.

Provo questions5
Where can I get rid of paint in Provo?

At the South Utah Valley Solid Waste District’s Dry Creek Transfer Station, 518 W 3450 N, Spanish Fork. Provo’s trash page sends hazardous items there.

Does it cost anything?

No, if you bring household hazardous waste by itself. Adding trash means paying the regular haul rate.

How much paint can I bring?

Up to 5 gallons of any one item per visit, in containers 5 gallons or smaller.

Can I put paint in my Provo garbage can?

Not liquid paint. Provo says hazardous waste shouldn’t go in your garbage bins and should go to the district’s transfer station, and the district lists paint as hazardous waste.

Can a painting company drop off paint?

Not at Dry Creek; the district takes no business waste. North Pointe asks businesses to call 801-225-8538 ext. 101.

Sources and how we checked11

October 12, 2026: read Provo City’s trash and recycling page (household hazardous waste tab) and seasonal cleanup page (opened in a browser; the city site blocks scripted requests), the South Utah Valley Solid Waste District’s home, household hazardous waste and services pages, the Utah County Health Department’s household hazardous waste page, North Pointe’s fees and FAQ pages, and Utah DEQ’s pages. PaintCare’s locator lists Dry Creek as a non-program site and says it won’t take empty, dry or leaking paint cans. Unresolved: the district doesn’t say whether it takes both latex and oil-based paint or give a rule for drying latex for the trash; its pages say 5 gallons per item ‘per visit’ and ‘per day’. The 2026 fall cleanup PDF could not be opened, so its paint rules weren’t read. Whether North Pointe accepts paint from Provo residents is not stated; its fee table lists 10 free gallons of paint for households while its FAQ says hazardous waste is taken ‘on a limited basis’. No Utah County event dates were found for 2026.
