Salt Lake Valley Landfill Household Hazardous Waste Collection Site

6030 W California Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84104

Accepts
Oil-based and water-based (latex) paint, stain and varnish, plus other household hazardous waste. No empty or dried latex paint cans.
Who can use it
Salt Lake County households. This landfill site takes no business waste.
Hours
The county health department lists Monday, Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m., and marks Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ‘self-service’. It doesn’t say what self-service means for paint. The landfill’s own page lists the hazardous waste facility as open Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed Sundays, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Load limits
No gallon limit is published. ‘Common household amounts’ are free; the county asks you to make an appointment for large amounts or drums. No paint in plastic bags.
Fees
Free for Salt Lake County residents bringing household amounts.

Drive to the scale house first; the landfill sends household hazardous waste loads through the scales. No one will help you unload, so bring a helper for heavy buckets and move your cans onto the county’s carts yourself. The number above is the hazardous waste site’s; the landfill office uses 385-468-6370. If you’re also dumping trash, cover the load: since January 1, 2026, uncovered loads pay an extra fee equal to the disposal price. The landfill reuse shelves close in winter.

Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center (Sandy)

8805 S 700 W, Sandy, UT 84070

Accepts
Oil-based and water-based (latex) paint, stain and varnish, plus other household hazardous waste. No empty or dried latex paint cans.
Who can use it
Salt Lake County households. Businesses that make under 220 pounds of hazardous waste a month and keep under 2,200 pounds on site can use it by appointment; the county names painters as an example.
Hours
Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed on Salt Lake County holidays. Business drop-offs by appointment only.
Load limits
No gallon limit is published for households. Call for an appointment for large amounts or drums. Keep containers upright and secure, never in plastic bags.
Fees
Free for Salt Lake County residents. Small businesses pay a fee based on the type and amount of waste; call for a quote.

The county opened this center in July 2024 (per a county health department presentation), just south of Sandy Public Works and next to the Trans-Jordan transfer station. If you’re also taking trash to the Trans-Jordan transfer station next door, Trans-Jordan says to drop the hazardous waste here first, then go to its scale house. Don’t bring waste gathered at community collection drives. Call ahead if you want free reuse paint.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take liquid paint to the Salt Lake Valley Landfill hazardous waste site, 6030 W California Ave., on a Monday, Friday or Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. It’s free for Salt Lake County residents and takes both latex and oil-based paint. The county’s Sandy center at 8805 S 700 W is open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Neither site takes empty or dried latex cans.

Salt Lake City, Utah, doesn’t run its own paint drop-off. You use Salt Lake County’s free household hazardous waste sites. The closest for most of the city is the Salt Lake Valley Landfill site at 6030 W California Ave. on the west side. Monday, Friday and Saturday are its regular days. It takes latex and oil-based paint, stain and varnish free from Salt Lake County residents, but not dried-out latex cans.

Midweek at the landfill is ‘self-service’

The county health department lists the landfill site’s hours as Monday, Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m., and marks Tuesday through Thursday ‘self-service’. It doesn’t say what that means for paint. The landfill’s own page just says the hazardous waste facility is open Monday–Saturday. If midweek is your only option, call the site at 801-541-4078 first (the landfill office is 385-468-6370), or use the Sandy center, open Monday–Saturday.

Stop at the scales and unload it yourself

The landfill sends household hazardous waste loads to the scale house first. The county says no one will help you unload: you move your cans onto its carts. Pack them upright in boxes or bins, not plastic bags, and bring a helper for 5-gallon buckets.

Dried latex isn’t hazardous waste

A county health department presentation lists dried latex paint as not household hazardous waste, and the county sites refuse empty or dried latex cans. So a can that has dried solid goes out with your household trash, not to a drop-off site. Salt Lake City’s own pages don’t mention dried paint; call Waste & Recycling at 801-535-6999 if you’re unsure.

City collection events have been latex-only

Salt Lake City Waste & Recycling and Veolia have held free eWaste and hazardous waste Saturday mornings (9 a.m.–noon) at the Streets Division lot, 1995 W 500 S. Those event pages list latex paint only, not oil-based, and were for residents, not businesses. They show no year, and no upcoming event was posted when we checked. Ask Salt Lake City Waste & Recycling at 801-535-6999 about future dates.

Free paint on the county reuse shelves

Usable products dropped off at the county sites go on reuse shelves, free to Salt Lake County residents (not businesses). Call before you drive over to ask if paint is in stock, and take only what you need. The landfill reuse centers close in winter.

Free pickup programs and other options

Utah has no PaintCare program, so there are no PaintCare drop-off sites at paint stores. The county’s third site, Trans-Jordan Landfill (10473 S Bacchus Hwy, South Jordan, 801-971-1976), is open Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and also free for county households. Utah DEQ suggests giving extra paint to neighbors. Never pour paint into a gutter or storm drain; the county says that’s illegal.

Keep paint in its original cans with tight lids. Sort by type and set cans upright in a sturdy box or tub so they can’t tip; no plastic bags. Let nearly empty latex cans dry out completely. If you’re also hauling trash to the landfill, tarp or cover the load.

Salt Lake City questions5
Where do I take old paint in Salt Lake City?

To a Salt Lake County household hazardous waste site. The Salt Lake Valley Landfill site at 6030 W California Ave. is closest for most of the city; the Sandy center at 8805 S 700 W is staffed six days a week.

Is it free?

Yes, for Salt Lake County residents bringing household amounts. Small businesses pay a fee and need an appointment; call 385-468-4380.

Will they take oil-based paint?

Yes. The county sites take oil-based and latex paint, stain and varnish.

Can I bring dried latex cans?

No. The county won’t take empty or dried latex cans. It doesn’t count dried latex as hazardous waste, so a fully dried can goes out with your household trash.

Can I go on a Wednesday?

The county marks the landfill site ‘self-service’ Tuesday through Thursday and doesn’t explain what that means. Call 801-541-4078 first, go Monday, Friday or Saturday, or use the Sandy center (Monday–Saturday).

Sources and how we checked13

October 12, 2026: read Salt Lake County’s household hazardous waste pages (main, safe disposal, reuse, businesses, contacts), the Salt Lake Valley Landfill page, a county health department presentation posted on the Utah Public Notice Website (the PDF file is dated April 22, 2026; it lists dried latex as not hazardous waste, says the Sandy center opened July 2024, and reports 743,433 pounds of latex and 104,894 pounds of oil-based paint collected in 2025), Salt Lake City’s recycling page, two SLCgreen event pages, Trans-Jordan’s hazardous waste page and Utah DEQ’s pages. PaintCare’s locator lists the county sites as non-program sites. Unresolved: what ‘self-service’ Tuesday–Thursday means for paint at the landfill site (the landfill page lists the hazardous waste facility as open Monday–Saturday 7–5). The landfill office phone (385-468-6370) differs from the hazardous waste site’s (801-541-4078); both are given. The SLCgreen event pages show no year. No Salt Lake City page says in plain words that dried latex can go in the trash; that advice rests on the county listing dried latex as non-hazardous and refusing dried cans. No published per-visit gallon limit or ID check was found.
