Start with these

Cumberland County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center (923 Wilkes Road)

923 Wilkes Road, Fayetteville, NC 28301

Accepts
Oil-based paint and stain, paint thinners and solvents, furniture strippers, wallpaper remover, aerosols and other household chemicals. Latex paint is not accepted. Caulk, glue, contact cement and drywall mud aren’t taken either; the county sends those to its construction and demolition landfill.
Who can use it
Cumberland County homeowners only. The county says people in the Town of Spring Lake, on Fort Bragg, and in nearby counties such as Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson and Bladen can’t use it, because they don’t pay the county’s Solid Waste User Fee. No businesses; they need a hazardous waste contractor.
Hours
Second Saturday of each month, 8 a.m.–noon. Fourth Wednesday of each month, noon–4 p.m. One visit per day.
Load limits
Up to 10 gallons or 80 pounds per visit, and one visit per day. No full drums over 5 gallons. Anything not in its original container must be labeled with what’s inside, or it’s refused. Containers aren’t handed back, so don’t bring a gas can you want to keep. Don’t bring empty or dried-out paint cans; take the lids off and put them in the garbage.
Fees
Free. The county says there is no charge for household hazardous waste.

The center is on Wilkes Road past the county’s Wilkes Road T&P facility. The county page gives ZIP 28301 for the site and 28306 in its contact box. The City of Fayetteville’s FAQ says in one answer that hazardous materials go to “the Cumberland County Landfill” and in another names the Wilkes Road facility; the county’s own page puts the drop-off at Wilkes Road.

THE LOCAL ANSWER

Dry out latex paint and put it in your trash: mix in kitty litter, sand or dirt until it stops flowing, leave the lid off and bag the can. Take oil-based paint and stain to Cumberland County’s free hazardous waste center at 923 Wilkes Road, open only the second Saturday (8 a.m.–noon) and fourth Wednesday (noon–4 p.m.) of each month. It’s for Cumberland County homeowners; Spring Lake and Fort Bragg residents can’t use it.

In Fayetteville, North Carolina, latex and oil-based paint go different ways. Cumberland County’s hazardous waste center at 923 Wilkes Road won’t take latex paint, so you dry it out and put it in the trash. Oil-based paint, stain and thinner go to that center, which opens only two half-days a month. This guide is for Cumberland County, not Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Latex paint never goes to Wilkes Road

The county center turns latex paint away. The county and the City of Fayetteville both say to mix kitty litter, sand or dirt into the can until the paint no longer flows. Then leave the lid off, put the can in a garbage bag and throw it out with your regular trash.

Two half-days a month

The Wilkes Road center is open the second Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to noon, and the fourth Wednesday, noon to 4 p.m. You get one visit a day, with up to 10 gallons or 80 pounds.

Spring Lake and Fort Bragg are left out

The county says Spring Lake, Fort Bragg and neighboring counties such as Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson and Bladen don’t pay its Solid Waste User Fee, so their residents can’t use the center. The page also says it’s for Cumberland County homeowners only.

No wet paint in your city cart

The City of Fayetteville says it’s against the law to put wet or oil-based paint in household trash, and its cart rules list paint as not allowed. Only latex that you have dried solid should go in the cart.

Remodel leftovers can be picked up for a fee

The city’s Special Waste service collects construction materials for a fee, and its list includes paint cans and buckets. The page doesn’t say whether cans can still hold liquid paint, so ask when you call 910-433-1329 to pay and schedule.

Free pickup programs and other options

Use up good paint or give it to someone who can. Latex paint can be dried with kitty litter, sand or dirt and thrown out. North Carolina has no PaintCare program, so paint stores here don’t take old paint back. If you live in Spring Lake, on Fort Bragg or in a neighboring county, ask your town, the installation or your own county what it offers, because the Cumberland County center won’t serve you. Raleigh and Durham have their own guides with different county rules.

Keep oil-based paint in its original can with the lid on tight. Label anything that isn’t in its original container, or staff will refuse it. Stay under 10 gallons or 80 pounds per trip. Leave empty and dried-out cans at home; take the lids off and put them in the garbage. For latex, stir in kitty litter, sand or dirt until it stops flowing, then bag the open can for the trash.

Sources and how we checked8

October 15, 2026: read Cumberland County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center page (923 Wilkes Road; second Saturday 8 a.m.–noon and fourth Wednesday noon–4 p.m.; one visit a day; 10 gallons or 80 pounds; latex paint not accepted; homeowners only; Spring Lake, Fort Bragg and adjoining counties excluded; no businesses; free) and its hours page; the City of Fayetteville’s Trash & Recycling FAQ, Household Waste and Special Waste pages; NC DEQ’s permanent facility list (Cumberland County listed); and PaintCare’s locator data, which also says latex isn’t taken. Unresolved: the county page shows ZIP 28301 and 28306; the city FAQ names both “the Cumberland County Landfill” and the Wilkes Road facility for hazardous materials; the county doesn’t say how renters are treated under its “homeowners only” rule; we found no Fort Bragg or Spring Lake paint program and no published paint policy for a local reuse store; the Special Waste page lists no fee amounts and doesn’t say whether full cans are allowed.
