Durham rules and tips4
THE LOCAL ANSWER

Take oil-based paint to the free Household Hazardous Waste Center at 2115 East Club Boulevard, Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturday 7:30 a.m. to noon. For latex, dry it with kitty litter or sand and put it in the trash. The center is for Durham city and county residents only, not businesses.

Durham takes oil-based paint free at its Household Hazardous Waste Center on East Club Boulevard, six days a week. Latex isn’t on the city’s list. Durham County’s guidance is to dry latex and put it in the trash.

One gate, three sites

The transfer station, yard waste site and hazardous waste center all sit at 2115 East Club Boulevard. Staff there direct traffic, so ask them to point you to the hazardous waste center; the transfer station itself takes no hazardous materials or liquids.

Dry your latex at home

The city’s accepted list names oil-based paint but not latex. Durham County’s paint guide says to add kitty litter or sand to leftover latex, let it dry solid, and throw it in the trash. Call Durham One Call at 919-560-1200 if you want to ask about bringing wet latex.

Avoid Saturday morning

The city says Saturday morning is the busiest time. On weekdays, 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. are also busy. Get inside the gate at least 15 minutes before closing.

County decal events are separate

Durham County holds its own hazardous waste days for unincorporated residents with a county decal, at the Northern Durham site on North Roxboro Road. The last ones were November 22, 2025 and June 6, 2026. No later date was posted as of October 7, 2026.

Free pickup programs and other options

Use up or give away good paint. Dry small amounts of latex with kitty litter or sand and put it in the trash. Rinse latex brushes in a sink, never outside where water reaches a storm drain. North Carolina has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don’t take old paint back.

Keep oil-based paint in its original labeled can; the center refuses unknown or unlabeled chemicals. Bring help if you have heavy loads, since staff at the site direct traffic rather than unload. Card or account only at the scale house for other waste; no cash.

Durham questions5
Does the Durham center take latex paint?

Latex isn’t on the city’s accepted list. Durham County says to dry leftover latex with kitty litter or sand and put it in the trash. Call 919-560-1200 if you have a lot.

Is there a fee for hazardous waste?

No. The city says it doesn’t charge for the items its hazardous waste center takes.

I live in Durham County outside the city. Can I use East Club Boulevard?

Yes. The center is open to City of Durham and Durham County residents.

Can a contractor use the center?

No. The city says commercial users can’t use the hazardous waste center.

When is the next county hazardous waste day?

None was posted as of October 7, 2026. The last two were November 22, 2025 and June 6, 2026, both for unincorporated residents with a county decal. Check the county site or call 919-560-0433.

Sources and how we checked7

October 7, 2026 check: read the City of Durham disposal and drop-off page in a browser (2115 East Club Blvd, hours, busy times, accepted list naming oil-based paint, no fee, no commercial users); the old /900 hazardous waste page now returns a 404. Read Durham County’s hazardous waste page (still showing a past May 17, 2025 event), the June 6, 2026 and November 22, 2025 event notices, and the county paint guide (a stormwater sheet: dry leftover latex for the trash; homeowners take unused paint, oil-based paint, thinners and aerosols to a hazardous waste facility). Not found: a city page that explicitly says latex is refused or allowed, a direct phone for the center (we list Durham One Call), and any fall 2026 county event date.
