Household trash, construction debris, green waste, mattresses and tires by fee; free drop-off for cardboard, mixed paper, office paper and e-waste. The city adds batteries of all types and small appliances. Paint is not named.
Who can use it
Residents and businesses; higher rates for waste from outside Cibola and McKinley counties.

Load limits
All loads must be covered and go over the scale for weighing and inspection.

The authority's fee page says 'Absolutely no hazardous or pathogenic wastes accepted,' while NMED's 2025 list names this station as McKinley County's household hazardous waste place. Call 505-863-5776 and ask about paint before you load it.

Cibola County Transfer Station (Northwest New Mexico Regional Solid Waste Authority; NMED says it takes household hazardous waste from Cibola and McKinley residents)

97 Post Office Flats Road, Bluewater, NM 87005

Accepts
The permit notice lists non-hazardous solid waste, construction debris and recyclables (scrap metal, white goods, green waste, tires, cardboard, aluminum, e-waste and waste oil). NMED's 2025 list says the authority 'accepts all HHW from residents of Cibola and McKinley Counties' here.

Addresses also differ: NMED lists 2305 West US Hwy 66, Milan; the authority lists 97 Post Office Flats Road, Bluewater, which its notice places 3 miles north of Milan on Hwy 568. Call 505-287-4150 before you make the trip.

City of Gallup Solid Waste Department (curbside service and the annual Community Cleanup Campaign)

1580 Hasler Valley Rd., Gallup, NM 87301

Gallup rules and tips5
THE LOCAL ANSWER

In Gallup, New Mexico, call the McKinley County Transfer Station at 505-863-5776 before you bring paint, because the state's list and the station's operator disagree on whether household hazardous waste is taken. If you're sent to Cibola County, call that transfer station at 505-287-4150 first; it's in Bluewater, near Milan. During the city's cleanups, the city wants paint, thinners and strippers boxed, labeled and kept apart from other items.

This guide is for Gallup in McKinley County, New Mexico. NMED's 2025 county list names the McKinley County Transfer Station at 107 Hasler Valley Road, and says the Cibola County Transfer Station takes all household hazardous waste from Cibola and McKinley county residents. But the Northwest New Mexico Regional Solid Waste Authority, which runs both, says on its fee page that no hazardous waste is accepted. Call before you load paint. New Mexico has no PaintCare program.

The state list and the operator disagree

NMED's 2025 list puts the McKinley County Transfer Station under McKinley County, and notes that the Cibola County Transfer Station accepts all household hazardous waste from Cibola and McKinley residents. The authority's own fee page, for both transfer stations, says 'Absolutely no hazardous or pathogenic wastes accepted.' Ask the station directly: 505-863-5776.

Free dump coupons are for refuse

City customers in good standing get three free dumping coupons a year, each good for 300 lbs at the transfer station, from Customer Care at City Hall (110 West Aztec). The city's web page values them at $7; its February 14, 2025 letter says $8. The station still bans hazardous waste, so ask before bringing paint.

Free pickup programs and other options

New Mexico has no PaintCare program, and PaintCare's locator data has no site in McKinley County. The New Mexico listings in that data are household-only or local programs for other places, for example Farmington's at-your-door collection for Farmington households, and Albuquerque's center for Albuquerque and Bernalillo County households (both non-program listings). The city's recycling bins at Ford Canyon (908 E. Buena Vista Ave.) and the Larry Brian Mitchell Recreation Center (701 Montoya Blvd.) take paper, cardboard and cans only. The authority's Red Rocks Regional Landfill near Thoreau posts the same no-hazardous-waste rule on its fee page; the authority's business office in Thoreau is 505-905-8400. NMED's Hazardous Waste Bureau answers hazardous waste questions at 505-476-6000.

Call 505-863-5776 before you load anything, and have your list ready: latex or oil-based, how many cans, and any thinner or stripper. If you're told to go to Cibola County, call 505-287-4150 to confirm the address and what they'll take. For a city cleanup, put paint in a box or crate, apart from other items, and label it, as the city asks. NMED lists paint as a toxic household hazardous waste and turpentine as an ignitable one.

Sources and how we checked15

October 17, 2026: read the City of Gallup's Solid Waste Department, Residential Collection, Community Cleanup Campaign and Recycling in Gallup pages, its 2026 cleanup flyer and its February 14, 2025 customer letter (gallupnm.gov); the Northwest New Mexico Regional Solid Waste Authority's home, McKinley and Cibola transfer station, transfer station fee and landfill fee pages and its Cibola permit review notice (nwnmrswa.org); and NMED's 2025 HHW-by-county list, 2025 fact sheet and May 2025 landfill list. The McKinley Citizens' Recycling Council's transfer station page (recyclegallup.org, read despite an expired security certificate, so not cited) lists recyclables and Monday to Saturday 8 to 5 hours with last load at 4:30, and no paint. McKinley County's site has no solid waste page. PaintCare data: no McKinley County listing. Conflicts: whether either transfer station takes household hazardous waste (NMED vs operator); the Cibola station address (Milan vs Bluewater); coupon value ($7 vs $8). Unresolved: whether paint of any kind is taken at either station, what happens to boxed household hazardous waste at city cleanups, and any Navajo Nation program (none found). No phone calls were made.
