Everything you need to get rid of leftover paint responsibly in Elko.

2200 Pinion Road, Elko, NV
City sources give different booking numbers: the drop-off sheet says 775-777-7396 (the landfill superintendent line); the recycling flyer says 777-7396 or 777-7210; the older flyer says 777-7396 or 777-7213. The city’s Utilities page lists the landfill superintendent at 775-777-7395 instead. Start with 775-777-7396, the number on the current sheet. The landfill scale house is 775-777-7394 and the information line is 775-777-7395.
Call 775-777-7396 for an appointment, then bring the cans to the landfill on Pinion Road. Thinner, stain, varnish and spray paint are all on the city’s list.
Don’t book a drop-off for it; the landfill won’t take liquid latex. Stir in kitty litter or floor dry until it’s solid and put the can in your household trash.
The city takes only personal household items and its older flyer rules out business and agriculture waste. The city doesn’t name another drop-off for work or ranch paint, so call 775-777-7396 to ask before you bring it.
Never rinse thinner or paint into the street. The city says storm drains flow untreated to local creeks and the Humboldt River. Put drop cloths around the project, and bring used thinner to the landfill drop-off by appointment.
In Elko, Nevada, harden leftover latex paint with kitty litter or floor dry and put it in your household trash; the landfill won’t take liquid latex. For oil-based paint, stain, varnish, thinner and spray paint, call 775-777-7396 to book a drop-off at the City of Elko Landfill, 2200 Pinion Road (open daily, 7 a.m.–4:30 p.m.). Only personal household items are taken, not business or farm waste.
Elko, Nevada (Elko County) has one place for oil-based paint and other household chemicals: the household hazardous waste drop-off at the City of Elko Landfill, 2200 Pinion Road. It works by appointment only, so call 775-777-7396 first. The landfill does not take liquid latex paint; the city tells you to harden it with kitty litter or floor dry and put it in your household trash. Nevada has no PaintCare program, so paint stores don’t take paint back.
The city’s drop-off sheet and both of its flyers say the household hazardous waste drop-off is by appointment. The current drop-off sheet says to call 775-777-7396, the landfill superintendent’s line. The city’s recycling flyer adds 777-7210, and an older flyer lists 777-7213. The city’s Utilities page lists the landfill superintendent at 775-777-7395, which is also the landfill information line; try it if 7396 doesn’t answer.
The landfill sheet says in capital letters: “We do not accept liquid latex paint.” Add kitty litter or floor dry to a partial can and put it in household trash. Elko Sanitation (775-738-3771), the private company the city lists for trash hauling, lists household hazardous waste as not accepted in its recycling program, which is for residents within Elko city limits.
The sheet lists oil-based paints and stains; varnish, shellac, epoxy and resin; paint stripper and brush cleaner; turpentine, paint thinner and lacquer thinner; sealants, wood preservatives, roofing tar, floor and tile adhesives; aerosol paints; and hobby glues and paints. Pesticides must be in their original containers and never mixed.
The recycling flyer says the program takes only personal household items. The older city flyer adds “no commercial, business or agriculture waste,” and Nevada’s environmental agency says the landfill takes household hazardous waste only from non-commercial customers. None of the city sources names a drop-off for paint from a ranch shop, a job site or a rental business, so ask at 775-777-7396 before you load it.
A city stormwater handout says Elko’s storm drains carry water to local creeks and the Humboldt River without treatment. It tells painters to lay drop cloths and never let cleaning solvent or paint thinner run into a storm drain. It lists paints and paint thinners among products to dispose of properly, and gives 775-777-7395 for recycling and hazardous waste disposal.
Nevada has no PaintCare program, so there’s no store take-back. Elko County’s 2016 solid waste plan says the City of Elko landfill takes household hazardous waste for the area, and that the Jackpot transfer station, Elko Sanitation’s waste bin sites and the county’s bin sites don’t. The plan says Lee, Ruby Valley and Deeth residents haul their own trash to the Elko landfill, and that Elko Sanitation collects trash in Spring Creek, Carlin, Wells, Lamoille, Jiggs and other county communities. County code from 2000, quoted in the plan, tells residents to take all household hazardous waste to the Elko landfill, and the plan says West Wendover’s city landfill also takes it. The 2016 plan also said the landfill dried collected paint on carpeting or cardboard and buried it with regular trash. Those details are from 2016, so confirm when you book. A 2019–2020 state “Special Waste Guide” for Elko pointed to the Carson City Landfill’s Thursday appointments instead; Elko’s own landfill now runs a drop-off, so start there.

Have your appointment time before you leave home. The city says pesticides must be in their original containers and not mixed. For latex, add kitty litter or floor dry to the partial can until no liquid is left, then put it in your household trash. Used motor oil is limited to 5 gallons per visit, according to the city’s recycling flyer. If you haul dried cans to the landfill yourself instead of using your cart, the city’s fee sheet (effective July 1, 2023) charges residential waste a $10 minimum or $40 a ton.
Full preparation checklist →To the household hazardous waste drop-off at the City of Elko Landfill, 2200 Pinion Road. Call 775-777-7396 for an appointment first; the landfill is open every day from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Not as a liquid. The city says to add kitty litter or floor dry to a partial can of latex and put it in your household trash.
The current drop-off sheet lists no fee, and the city’s older flyer says “free every day.” The 2023 landfill fee sheet doesn’t list household hazardous waste. Ask when you call to book.
No. The city lists 11 holiday closures, including Nevada Day (the last Friday in October), Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, plus any holiday the City Council adds.
The sources point that way, but none says so for certain. Elko County’s 2016 plan, and the county code quoted in it, tell residents to take household hazardous waste to the Elko landfill, and the landfill says it serves the city and surrounding areas. The city’s current pages don’t spell out who can use it, so ask at 775-777-7396.
October 17, 2026: read the City of Elko Municipal Landfill page, its Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off sheet (PDF), the Elko Recycles flyer, an older household hazardous waste flyer (2015 file), the July 2023 landfill fee sheet, the Utilities page, the city’s stormwater painting handout, Elko Sanitation’s recycling guide, Nevada DEP’s Where Can I Recycle page and its 2019–2020 Elko guide, and Elko County’s 2016 Solid Waste Management Plan. PaintCare’s locator data has no Elko County listing. Conflicts: three different second phone numbers for booking (7210, 7213, and the main 7396), and the Utilities page lists the landfill superintendent at 7395 rather than 7396; the older flyer lists out-of-date medicines as accepted, while the newer recycling flyer sends medications to the police and sheriff. The 2019 state guide pointed Elko residents to Carson City. Unresolved: whether there is a fee or gallon limit, whether non-city residents need proof of address, whether the drop-off takes empty or dried paint cans, and whether Elko Sanitation has its own rule on dried latex in carts (its guide only bans hazardous waste from recycling). The 2016 county plan is the newest county-wide source found, and facts from it are labeled with its year.
